PROGRAM RECORD SHATTERED BY WOMEN’S GOLF IN WILLIAMSBURG

ROUND 3

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Led by two golfers in the top 10 of the individual standings, the Radford women's golf team carded its lowest 54-hole ledger in program history Tuesday to finish fifth at the William & Mary Invitational. The tournament was played at Kingsmill Resort's Plantation Course (par 71, 5,958 yards).

"It's always gratifying to see our golfers reach their full potential," expressed head coach Jeff Beeler. "Factoring in the windy conditions the field was faced with today, this is one of the best 18-hole rounds our program has ever recorded."

One day after firing their lowest round of the season (305), the Highlanders knocked 13 shots off that figure to bring an 8-over-par 292 into the clubhouse, which accounted for the low round of the day. Radford's 54-hole total of 912 was seven swings clear of the previous record shot at the 2011 Bison Invitational. In terms of relation to par, the Highlanders improved their record by an impressive 19 shots due to the previous standard being shot on a par 70 layout.

Fueling the charge on the final day was Hayley Hammond, who fired a career-best, 1-under-par 70. She tied for sixth at 220 (75-75-70). The Mooresville, N.C. native was sensational on the par 3s, going 1-under-par to tie for third in the field on those holes.

Also tying for sixth was Alexandra Austin. The Burke, Va. native registered a 1-over-par 72 to finish at 220 (75-73-72) as well. In addition, she tied for second in the field in par-4 scoring at 4-over-par. As a team, Radford finished second to Morehead State in par-4 scoring.

Battling windy conditions for most of the round made freshman Olivia Jay feel right at home. The York, England native charted her season-best round of 2-over-par 73 to tie for 24th at 235 (81-81-73). Paige Reese tied for 29th at 238 (84-77-77), while Kirsty Condon tied for 38th at 248 (84-80-84).

Morehead State posted a 17-shot victory over runner-up Elon. The Eagles finished at 881 (294-291-296), while the Phoenix concluded the tournament at 898 (302-293-303). Tournament host William & Mary finished third at 903 (294-296-313) and Richmond was fourth at 907 (307-296-304). The Spiders were five shots clear of the surging Highlanders.

Elon's Sunna Vidisdottir used a 1-under-par 70 to overtake Anna Appert Lund of Morehead State for medalist honors. Her 2-over-par 215 (72-73-70) was one stroke lower than Lund's 216 (75-68-73).

Radford is back in action Sept. 23-24 at High Point's Myrtle Beach Fall Invitational. The two-day, 36-hole event will be played at Myrtle Beach National in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
