BASEBALL OPENS UP IN ATLANTA ON FRIDAY

Radford Baseball's 2014 season begins on Friday in Atlanta against VCU in the Battle in Midtown tournament hosted by Georgia Tech. The Highlanders face the Rams at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, the host YellowJackets on Saturday (4:00 p.m.) and Old Dominion on Sunday (10:00 a.m.). The games will be played at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Friday (VCU) – Michael Boyle (5-3, 4.76) vs. Heath Dwyer (7-6, 2.78)

VCU went 28-26 in its first season in the Atlantic 10… Its lineup will include Joey Cujas and Bill Cullen. The duo produced 68 RBIs and 70 runs. Cujas led the squad with a .333 average, 16 doubles and 40 RBI to go along with 31 runs and a .407 on base percentage… On the mound, the Rams will turn to a third-year starter Heath Dwyer, who this past year won seven games en route to a 7-6 record with a 2.78 ERA and 74 punchouts in 107 innings… Closer Matt Lees earned 11 saves and posted a 1.22 ERA in 30 appearances.

Georgia Tech opens its 117th season of baseball this weekend following a 37-27 showing in 2013… Junior Cole Pitts takes to the mound on Saturday against the Highlanders… He went 5-3 with a 4.71 ERA in 65 innings… The YellowJackets lost their top four hitters, batting .321 or better, from last season… Top returning bat in the lineup is Matt Gonzalez, who posted a .291 average with 66 hits, nine doubles, 37 RBI and 37 runs scored.

Old Dominion finished 2013, 30-24 overall and 15-12 in the CAA… At the plate, Josh Eldridge hit .297 with a team best 50 RBI, 15 doubles, four triples and was second on the team with 41 runs scored and six homers… Jordan Negrini  hit .275 with 13 doubles, two triples and three homers… On the hill, lefty Andy Roberts (5-3, 2.92 ERA) will get the ball against the Highlanders… He led the Monarch in wins and ERA last season.
