SOFTBALL HEADS TO CHARLOTTE FOR SEASON OPENER

Radford Softball will take a second crack at its season opener on Wednesday. The Highlanders travel to Charlotte to take on the 49ers at the D.L. Phillips Softball Complex in a single contest at 6:30 p.m. The game was added after both squads lost games due to the snowstorm last weekend.
 
Highlander Bites – The Highlanders return four starters from last season, including 2013 first-team all-conference pitcher Rachael Walters, along with three every-day players in senior Jessie Hutchens (SS) and fellow league all-freshman selections, Casey Burns (1B) and Becky Mantel (CF)…  This is the 23rd season of Radford Softball… RU is young with 10 newcomers on the squad this season (8 freshmen) and 16 underclassmen… RU has just two seniors and two juniors.
 
The 49ers – Charlotte split its season-opening doubleheader at Gardner-Webb on Feb. 8, winning the opener, 8-0, but falling the nightcap, 6-3… Following the cancelation of their weekend tournament, the 49ers will host South Carolina prior to the contest with the Highlanders… In the twinbill, Jessica Kleinsmith went 5-for-6 (.833) with a home run, RBI and two runs scored… Hayley Lewis and Samantha Slade each batted .500 (3-6)… Lewis collected two doubles and scored two runs, while Slade knocked in two and scored three… Lexi Betancourt tossed a complete game shutout in game one, striking out eight and scattering six hits.
 
The Series – Following a sweep by the 49ers in Charlotte last season, Radford is 9-15 against the 49ers… The Highlanders dropped a pair of one-run contests last season, 1-0 and 5-4.
 
Up Next – The Highlanders head to Chattanooga, Tenn. for the Frost Classic (Feb. 21-23). Radford opens with Middle Tennessee (11 Austin Peay, Butler, the host Moccasins and Tennessee Tech.
