SOFTBALL OUT HITS UTC BUT FALLS TO HOST MOCS, 5-2

BOX SCORE CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Radford out hit Chattanooga, 10-8, but the Mocs hit three home runs, two by Alyssa Taylor, to upend the Highlanders, 5-2 on Saturday evening at the Frost Classic at Frost Stadium.

Despite the hit count, RU could not string them together and get the big one with runners in scoring position. Sophomores Megan Honaker, Nia Chiles and Becky Mantel, along with freshman Julie Gardner recorded two hits apiece. Senior Jessie Hutchens and Gardner recorded a RBI each.

Radford tried to rally in the seventh, loading the bases with one out thanks to a pair of singles and an error. Hutchens spoiled the shutout with a sac fly and Gardner dumped a RBI single into left to make it 5-2, but the rally ended on a grounder to short.

Taylor gave UTC a 2-0 lead with a pair of solo home runs in the first and third innings. A three-run longball by Jenny Garcia with two outs in the fifth extended the Moccasins lead to 5-0. The runs were all unearned as an error allowed the first runner of the inning to reach.

The Highlanders also threatened in the second and fourth innings leaving five runners on, including a bases loaded chance in the second. However, the threats were ended by on a force out at home in the second and a groundout to first in the fourth.

Junior Kelsey Weddle started and suffered the loss as she allowed two runs on four hits with one strikeout in 2.2 innings. Walters surrendered three unearned runs on three hits in two inning with three strikeouts. Freshman Abby Morrow came in and posted 1.1 frames of scoreless relief.
