HAMMOND LEADS RADFORD IN OPENING ROUND OF KIAWAH ISLAND CLASSIC

ROUND 1  |  TEE TIMES  |  LIVE SCORING

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. –
Hayley Hammond was one of two Highlanders to shoot in the 70s Sunday as Radford women's golf is 23rd through 18 holes of the Kiawah Island Classic hosted by the College of Charleston at the Kiawah Island Resort.

"Overall, our first time out was a decent start with all things considered," head coach Jeff Beeler said. "It took us a few holes to knock the rust off, being our first competitive round since October. We have two rounds left to improve our standing."

The Highlanders played on the par 72, 5,902-yard Oak Point golf course for their first round. They carded a 318 on the Clyde Johnson-designed layout. Leading the way for RU was Hammond, who is tied for 62nd at 5-over-par 77. An eagle on the par-5 fourth hole bolstered her round.

Two shots behind and tied for 90th is Kirsty Condon, who logged a 7-over-par 79. A red-hot start to her round set the tone for Condon's day as she recorded birdies on her first two holes.

Olivia Jay returned the next best round to the clubhouse with her 80. The freshman is tied for 98th with 36 holes to play. After a rocky start on her opening nine holes, Alexandra Austin rebounded with a 2-over-par back nine to post an 82. She is tied for 120th. Paige Reese charted two birdies on her way to an 87, which is tied for 152nd.

Troy leads the 36-team field at 3-over-par 291. The Trojans have three of their golfers inside the top 20 of the individual standings, including Taylor McGraw who is tied for first at 3-under-par 69. 37th-ranked Kent State, Jacksonville State and St. John's are in a three-way tie for second at 4-over-par 292.

For Monday's second round, teams will play the course they did not play in the opening round. In Radford's case, it will head to the par 72, 6,001-yard Cougar Point golf course. Reese is the first Highlander on the course at 9:18 a.m. RU is paired with Boston University and Western Kentucky.

Following tomorrow's 18 holes, the field will split into two tournaments. The top 19 teams will play on Cougar Point for the final round and the remaining 17 teams will battle on Oak Point.
