WOMEN’S TENNIS EARNS FIRST BIG SOUTH WIN AT LONGWOOD

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Radford women's tennis team netted its first Big South win of the season Wednesday, defeating Longwood, 5-2, at the Lancer Courts in Farmville, Va.

With the exception of the top flight, doubles competition was tight. The Highlanders' (6-8, 1-2 Big South) Meg Napolitano and Grace Sarver won their fifth-straight match by prevailing 8-1 over Malin Allgurin and Sarah Moomau on court one.

Improving to 2-0 when paired together, Taylor Newman and Taylor Fay outlasted Mason Thomas and Bethany Law, 8-7 (8-6), at the third spot to clinch the doubles point. Gisela Garcia and Sara Andrade also won their bout at No. 2 over Paloma Alatorre and Anna Pelak, 8-7 (9-7).

For the sixth time in her previous seven matches, Sarver reigned victorious by dispatching Moomau (6-1, 6-0) at No. 3 singles. Pelak brought the Lancers (2-7, 1-5 Big South) within 2-1 when she took down Garcia (6-1, 6-0) at the fourth position. However, before a comeback could be sustained Fay and Napolitano recorded victories to seal the dual for RU.

The Highlanders return to the Radford University Tennis Complex for their next two matches. On deck is UNC Asheville, which is scheduled to come to the New River Valley Saturday for a noon match. With rain in the forecast, the dual will most likely be moved to Sunday. A decision will be made later this week regarding a possible change.
