BOX SCORE CONWAY, S.C. – Senior Jessie Hutchens tied the school record with her 18th home run and No. 3 Radford outhit No. 6 Presbyterian, 9-6, but the Blue Hose (26-24) scored two runs in the top of the 6th to break a 2-2 deadlock and defeat the Highlanders (22-29), 4-2 in the opening round of the 2014 Big South Tournament on Thursday evening at CCU Softball Field.

Radford will take on No. 2 Longwood in an elimination game at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow.

In the sixth, a one-out RBI double by Shelby Petik put the Blue Hose back on top for good, 3-2. Following a pitching change, a high chopper over first doubled their lead to 4-2 and that score stood for the win.

Hutchens record-tying long ball evened the score a half inning before PC's two-run frame. She sent an opposite field bomb to right center with one out in fifth to tie the game at 2-2 in the fifth.

Radford had ample opportunities to put runs on the board, but stranded 10 runners, leaving the bases loaded in the second and sixth innings.

Hutchens and sophomore Whitney Davis each recored two hits, a home run and a RBI. Sophomore Nia Chiles also registered a pair of hits for the Highlanders. Sophomore Becky Mantel was hit two more time, bringing her NCAA-leading total to 37, two more than any other team in the Big South.

Kensley Loudermelk earned the complete game win for PC. She worked around nine hits, by striking out eight and not walking a batter. Sophomore Rachael Walters suffered the loss in 5.1 innings of work. She surrendered four runs on five hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

A leadoff double by Petik and a two-out RBI single by Erin Taylor gave Presbyterian a 1-0 lead in the second. It was the first run allowed by the Highlanders against the Blue Hose this season (20.2 shutout innings).

With one out in the third, Davis launched her 10th long ball of the season to even the game at 1-1.

Taylor put the Blue Hose back on top, 2-1, with a leadoff home run in the fifth. She was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Petik was also, 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI.
