WOMEN’S TENNIS SNAPS NATION’S LONGEST WINNING STREAK

ORLANDO, Fla. – Radford upended Wayne State at Star Island Resort Thursday evening, 5-2, ending the nation's longest winning streak by a women's tennis team (across all divisions). The Warriors entered the match with a 19-0 record.

Radford got off to a strong start in doubles, claiming all three decisions. Natalie Sayer and Taylor Fay won their third straight doubles match, downing Lauren Hughes and Ashley Walker in the third slot, 8-3.

Grace Sarver and Meg Napolitano locked up the doubles point with their 8-5 triumph over Alex Poissant and Julia Kamenko on court 2. Taylor Newman and Gemma Valls made it a clean sweep in doubles when they outlasted Yahsha Moore and Anne Li Briand, 8-7 (5), at the top flight.

The Highlanders (2-7) extended their lead to 3-0 behind singles victories from Sayer and Newman at the first and second positions, respectively. However, Wayne State refused to go away quietly, collecting wins at the fourth and fifth flights to close the gap to 3-2 with two singles matches to go.

Valls ended the Warriors' comeback at No. 3 singles by clinching the decision with her 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Poissant. Napolitano provided the final Radford tally by cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Hughes on court 6.

RU concludes its Florida trip Friday with a 10 a.m. match against South Dakota at Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando.
