WOMEN’S GOLF OFF TO OUTSTANDING START AT CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

ROUND 1

GEORGETOWN, S.C. – Fueled by four of its golfers in the Top-20, Radford opened with a 315 and is in fourth place following Tuesday's first round of the 2015 Big South Women's Golf Championship at The DeBordieu Golf Club (par 72, 6,191 yards).

The Highlanders are just one shot behind Campbell and Gardner-Webb, who are tied for second. Coastal Carolina, which entered the tournament as the top seed, fired a 301 and carries a 13-shot lead with 18 holes to go.

Radford will be seeking to make program history in Wednesday's final round. The Highlanders have never finished higher than fourth place at the conference championship.

They have that opportunity in large part because of the stellar play from freshmen Larissa Carter and Khushboo Thiagaraj. On the strength of two birdies and 14 pars, Carter logged a 2-over-par 74 and is tied for third place. She finished with a strong back nine, going even par over her final nine holes.

Thiagaraj was able to weather a bumpy stretch of holes on her back nine by finishing her round with a birdie at the par-5 18^th to register a 79. The Haymarket, Va., native is tied for ninth.

Also ending her round with a birdie was Alexandra Austin. The senior returned an 81 to the clubhouse, which is tied for 19^th. Sophomore Olivia Jay matched Austin's 81. She recorded birdies at the par-4 1^st and the par-5 18^th. Meagan Board shot an 89 in her first conference championship round. The Roanoke, Va., native is tied for 40^th.

Big South Freshman of the Year Malene Krolboll Hansen of Coastal Carolina tops the 44-golfer field behind an even-par 72. Teammate Lena Schaeffner is one stroke behind at 1-over-par 73.

Wednesday's final round is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Radford will play with Winthrop and Longwood for the final 18 holes.
