DOUBLES POINT SECURES 4-3 VICTORY FOR WOMEN’S TENNIS

RADFORD, Va. – After battling to a 3-all tie in singles, the Radford women's tennis team swept all three doubles matches to prevail, 4-3, over Presbyterian College Friday afternoon at the Radford University Tennis Complex.

Competition began with singles due to the threat of rain in the area. Meg Napolitano and Grace Sarver quickly put the Highlanders (5-10, 2-6 Big South) on top, 2-0, as the duo only dropped a combined one game in their respective singles matches on courts five and six.

After PC (12-8, 1-6 Big South) evened the dual at 2-2, Gemma Valls helped RU reclaim the lead behind her 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Carolina deLoach at No. 3 singles. The final singles decision came down to the wire as Taylor Newman and Brittany Nuttall battled to a third set. In the final frame, Newman erased a 3-1 deficit by winning the next three games to go ahead, 4-3. However, Nuttall rallied with a 3-0 run of her own to capture the third set, 6-4.

In doubles, Sarver and Napolitano gave RU an early advantage by defeating Madison Utberg and Antonia Conze, 8-4, at the third flight. Natalie Sayer and Valls clinched the team victory by prevailing, 8-2, on court one over deLoach and Sara McBride. Newman and Taylor Fay also won their doubles match, downing Nuttall and Claire-Mitchell Andrews, 8-6.

The Highlanders continue their homestand Saturday at 1 p.m. against Interstate 81 foe James Madison.
