SOFTBALL VISITS VIRGINIA TECH ON WEDNESDAY


 
RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team still has two weeks before its home opener, but will play in the New River Valley on Wednesday as it makes the short trip over to Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
 
With six victories in nine games over their first two weekends, the Highlanders are already halfway to their win total from last season. The matchup is the first of a home-and-home between the teams, with the Hokies playing at Radford on April 20.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 6-3
  • Coming off a 17-hit performance in its last game, Radford's .317 team batting average is second-best in the Big South.
  • The Highlanders' nine games are tied for the fewest of any conference team, but RU is second in the league with five triples and tied for third with 19 doubles.
  • Six different players have scored at least five runs, while five have contributed at least five RBIs and six have hit home runs.
  • Freshman catcher Marissa Yow is tied for fourth in the conference with a .417 average and tied for third with five doubles. She also has totaled six RBIs.
  • Summer Robinson is hitting .375 with four doubles and six RBIs.
  • Marissa Gagliano has a team-high seven RBIs and five stolen bases, along with batting .367.
  • Becky Mantel has two homers and five RBIs, while freshman Hannah Medlam has driven in six runs.
  • In the circle, Abby Morrow is 4-3 with a 2.84 ERA. She has 19 strikeouts and just three walks in 37 innings.
  • As a team, RU is second in the conference with a .235 opponent batting average and fourth in ERA at 3.28.
 
SCOUTING VIRGINIA TECH
  • Record: 4-10
  • Six of Virginia Tech's losses have come to ranked teams, including one to defending national champion Florida and three to national runner-up Michigan.
  • The Hokies are coming off a 3-2 showing last weekend at the USC Upstate Tournament, with wins over Morehead State (8-0), USC Upstate (6-0) and Ohio (5-4). Both defeats were to Ohio State.
  • Chelsea Whitcomb leads the team with a .333 average.
  • Breanna Davenport is batting .286 with a team-high eight runs scored.
  • Olivia Lattin is the team's RBI leader with seven, while Vanessa Gonzalez has hit three home runs.
  • Maggie Tyler is Tech's top returning pitcher. She is 2-5 with a 4.48 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 40.2 innings, while facing the Hokies' formidable competition. Whitcomb has made eight appearances in the circle and is 2-3 with a 7.26 ERA.
  • Fifteen of the 21 players on Tech's roster are either freshmen or sophomores.
 
UP NEXT
Radford competes in its final regular-season tournament this weekend, traveling to UNC Wilmington for the Seahawk Softball Showcase. The Highlanders will play games against host UNCW and Virginia on both Saturday and Sunday.
