HRBEK NAMED BIG SOUTH PITCHER OF THE WEEK



RADFORD, Va. – Two days removed from tossing the first nine-inning no-hitter in Radford baseball history, senior right-hander Danny Hrbek was honored as the Big South's Pitcher of the Week, the leagued announced on Monday.
 
The no-hitter was the fourth in program history, which includes two seven-inning no hitters and one rain-shortened five-inning game. The no-hitter marked the fourth of the 2017 NCAA Division I season.
 
"Danny was obviously outstanding," said head coach Joe Raccuia. "The combination of his velocity, movement and command allowed him to pitch ahead and stay in advantage counts."
 
Hrbek totaled a career-high eight strikeouts, yielding no walks, facing just one batter over the minimum. In the nine innings, Hrbek had three innings of two-plus strikeouts, throwing only 88 pitches in the contest that included 63 strikes. The only blemish on the day for the Highlanders was a throwing error in the bottom of the first inning.
 
"His ability to go in and out with his fastball allowed him to control the entire plate," Raccuia added. "I am proud of his accomplishment."
 
The Effort, Pa. native threw just 17 pitches to retire the final nine Bobcats to cap off the Highlanders' first no-hitter since Jason Anderson tossed a seven-inning affair against UNC Asheville on April 15, 1995.
 
Hrbek entered the game with nine innings to his name, allowing 12 earned runs on 17 hits. He had six career strikeouts in the in the nine innings. Hrbek lowered his season ERA to from 16.50 to 6.60. Opposing batters are only hitting .200 off Hrbek this season.

In addition to the conference award, Hrbek was named a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper National Player of the Week and a Golden Spikes Award Golden Standard Performance nominee.
 
Radford (2-9) continues no-conference road action with a midweek two-game series with Commonwealth foe George Mason on Tuesday and Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. on both days.
