SOFTBALL TRAVELS TO MOREHEAD STATE FOR FIRST TIME



RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team is set to head back out on the road and play its first-ever games against Morehead State in a series that has been moved up a day due to the forecast for inclement weather.
 
The Highlanders and Eagles will now play a doubleheader Friday starting at 1 p.m., with a single game scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m.
 
HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Record: 9-6
  • Radford enjoyed a successful home opener Wednesday, posting a 5-2 victory over Virginia for its third straight victory.
  • Brittany Wratchford hit a two-run homer in the victory, giving the Highlanders' four players with multiple home runs this season. She is hitting a team-best .353 and is now tied for Hunter Mundy for team RBI lead with nine.
  • Marissa Gagliano had two hits, including the first triple of the year, and two runs scored, pushing her team-high total for the season to 11, along with 12 stolen bases.
  • Radford is now 28 for 36 on steal attempts, with Sofia Tapia owning 11 and seven different players recording at least one.
  • Abby Morrow posted her third consecutive complete game win, giving her 39 victories to tie Jackie Jenkins for fifth-most in Radford history. She is at 299 career strikeouts.
  • Morrow is now 8-3 with a 2.66 ERA on the year has now allowed one earned run or less in five of her last six starts and not walked a batter in 29 innings over four-plus outings.
  • Maggie Rowe still leads the team in hits with 15, followed by Kayla Bishton with 14 and Hannah Medlam at 13. Four others have at least 11.
  • Rowe, Gagliano and Mundy each lead the team with four multiple-hit games.
  • Wratchford and Bishton have both collected at least one in hit in five of the last six contests.
  • Sofia Tapia has made the most of her nine hits, totaling eight RBIs. Rowe has also driven in eight runs, while Bishton and Summer Robinson each have seven.
  • The Highlanders are 8-0 this season when leading after four innings.
 
SCOUTING MOREHEAD STATE
  • Record: 9-7
  • Morehead State is coming off a 2-1 weekend at the East Tennessee State tournament, closing it out with consecutive one-run victories over ETSU (7-6) and St. John's (5-4).
  • Earlier this season, the Eagles split two games against Campbell, winning 2-0 and losing 5-0. They also exchanged shutouts at Kennesaw State (6-0 win and 9-0 loss).
  • Last year, Morehead went 26-27, recording its most victories since 2010 and its first Ohio Valley Conference tournament win since 2009.
  • Junior Chelsea McManaway, a junior transfer from the University of Findlay (Ohio) has led the way in the circle. She is 5-3 with a 0.84 ERA and five shutouts in nine starts. The left-hander has allowed just 39 hits in 58 innings with 82 strikeouts and 31 walks.
  • Sophomore Allison Rager (2-2, 10.00 ERA) and Megan Tymorek (2-2, 4.20 ERA) have combined to start the team's seven other games, totaling 15 strikeouts and 14 walks in 40.2 innings.
  • Rager leads the team in batting with a .412 average and has three home runs, three doubles and 10 RBIs.
  • Junior Robyn Leighton, an All-OVC second-team catcher in 2016, has already matched her home run total from last season with six, while totaling 19 RBIs and hitting .318.
  • Senior shortstop Karly Thompson has a .316 average with six doubles and six RBIs.
  • Morehead is hitting .233 as a team, averaging 3.8 runs per game and is 15 for 15 on stolen base attempts.
 
UP NEXT
  • Radford plays back-to-back mid-week doubleheaders Tuesday and Wednesday, first traveling to East Tennessee State and then playing host to NC Central, with the latter now scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m.
