BELYAEVA PICKS UP VICTORIES AT ITA ATLANTIC REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

LYNCHBURG, VA – Junior Anastasia Belyaeva represented the Radford women's tennis team at the 2018 ITA Division I Atlantic Women's Regional Championships this past weekend on the campus of Liberty University.

The transfer from Texas Rio Grande Valley opened up the weekend with convincing wins over Anna Dollar (Liberty) and Madison Ballow (Marshall) to earn a place in the main draw. Belyaeva topped Dollar 6-3, 6-1 before defeating Ballow 6-3, 6-3.

She then earned a victory over George Washington's Oleksandra Andrieieva in the Round of 64 on Saturday morning. The Khabarovsk, Russia native fought hard to pick up a thrilling three-set victory against Andrieieva, advancing to the second round. She took the first set by a 6-3 count but was edged, 5-7, in an extremely tight second set. Belyaeva displayed her toughness with a 6-4 triumph in the deciding set to pick up her first tournament victory in a Highlander uniform.

Belyaeva returned to the Cook Tennis Complex on Sunday but was eliminated in the Round of 32 by Clara Tanielian of William & Mary in yet another three-setter. Belyaeva shook off an opening set loss (2-6) by coming up with a gritty, 6-4 win in the second set. Unfortunately, the powerful right-hander dropped the final set by a narrow count of 7-5.

Radford will compete at the Elon Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Elon, North Carolina.
