RADFORD VISITS PEACH STATE FOR BULLDOG CLASSIC



ATHENS, Ga. – The Radford softball team travels back to the Peach State to compete in the Bulldog Classic hosted by Georgia. The tournament begins on Friday with a doubleheader against UNC Greensboro at 1 p.m., and then No. 14 Georgia at 3:30 p.m.
 
Radford takes on UNC Greensboro once more to open Saturday's play at 10:30 a.m., and will face Jacksonville State in the nightcap at 6 p.m. The Highlanders final game will be on Sunday at 10:30 a.m., against Jacksonville State.
 
SETTING THE STAGE
 
HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Radford (10-4) is fresh off a 4-0 win over a Power Five rival opponent Virginia Tech. It's the first win for Radford in Blacksburg since 2009.
  • The Highlanders had an awesome performance from Abby Morrow and the defense behind her on Wednesday evening.
  • Marissa Gagliano is batting .488 this season, which tops the Big South. She is also on a current nine game hitting streak.
  • Radford still ranks inside the nation's top 15 in home runs per game. The Highlanders are 14th and have hit 1.31 per game this season.
  • The Highlanders have had four perfect games on defensive and they all have come in the last six games.
  • Gagliano ranks 31st nationally with a .592 on-base percentage. That number also ranks first in the Big South.
  • Abby Morrow leads the pitching staff with a 7-2 record, 28 strikeouts, eight complete games and a 1.73 ERA.
  • Morrow has only allowed three walks all season and ranks 11th nationally in walks allowed per seven innings averaging 0.38.
  • The Highlanders are 7-1 inside the state of Georgia in 2018.
  • Radford has a 2.17 team ERA, 62 strikeouts and has recorded five shutouts in 14 games.
  • Radford has outscored its opponents 64-37, including 29-10 in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
 
SCOUTING UNC GREENSBORO
  • Series: UNCG leads 31-14 | Last Meeting: April 28, 2015 (UNCG won 8-4)
  • Last weekend UNCG went 4-1 in the UNCG Invitational for its first home action of the season.
  • The Spartans lead the SoCon in on-base percentage (.398), home runs (13) and hit by pitches (25) and are second in batting average (.288), slugging percentage (.441), runs scored (74), RBIs (67), total bases (156), walks (41) and sacrifice bunts (nine).
  • UNCG ranks first in the nation in fielding percentage (.987) with just five errors on the season.
  • The Spartans lead the league in opposing batting average (.190), batters struck out (79) and saves (two) and rank second in ERA (1.98), batters struck out looking, and least amount of wild pitches.
  • Offensively Kayleigh Willis leads the team with a .480 batting average. Marisa Sholtes has a team-high four home runs and is tied for a team-leading nine RBIs.
 
SCOUTING No. 14 GEORGIA
  • Series: Georgia leads 7-0 | Last Meeting: May 23, 2010 (Georgia won 8-1)
  • Saturday will mark the first meeting between the two schools in eight years when they met in the Athens Regional final.
  • Georgia widened its winning streak to 12 games with four shutout wins at the Georgia Classic over the weekend. The pitching staff worked 25 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and combining for 29 strikeouts of opponents.
  • At the plate, Georgia leads the SEC in six offensive categories including batting average (.406), slugging (.694), on-base percentage (.466), hits (155), home runs (25), and total bases (265).
  • In the country, Georgia's team batting average is the best in the nation. The Bulldogs also lead the NCAA in home runs per game (1.79), slugging, and scoring (8.86 runs/game).
  • The Bulldogs have outscored opponents 124-14 in 14 games this season.
  • Justice Milz leads the squad with a .525 batting average, while inside the circle, Brittany Gray has not allowed an earned run this season and holds a perfect 6-0 record with a team-high 36 innings pitched.
 
SCOUTING JACKSONVILLE STATE
  • Series: Radford leads 3-2 | Last Meeting: Feb. 26, 2012 (Radford won 3-2)
  • Jacksonville State started off the year 4-2, but has since then lost six of its last eight games including a series loss to Southern Miss.
  • Taylor Beshears leads the team with a .400 batting average, three home runs and 11 RBIs.
  • The other leading hitter is Anna Chisolm who has three home runs as well. Chisolm has a .486 slugging percentage.
  • Alexus Jimmerson (2-2) leads the team with a 2.03 ERA, but Faith Sims leads the team with 46.2 innings pitched and 41 strikeouts.
