SOFTBALL RETURNS; TRAVELS TO WINTHROP FOR THREE-GAME SERIES



ROCK HILL, S.C. – After 11 days off, two games cancelled and a series postponed thanks to snowy weather in spring, Radford will be back on the diamond with a three-game series in Rock Hill, S.C., beginning on Friday at 5 p.m., and ending with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Radford (14-12) fell to Longwood on March 18, 1-0, the last time they faced live competition.
  • Runs came at a premium in the series as the Lancers outscored the Highlanders, 8-3, over three games.
  • Marissa Gagliano recorded four hits, one double and two runs scored in last weekend's series.
  • Gagliano leads the team in hits with 33 and has a .423 batting average – ranking third in the Big South – and a 1.144 OPS (on-base plus slugging).
  • The Riviera Beach, Fla., native is currently on a 26-game reached base streak and at one time had a 10-game hitting streak.
  • Talia Douglas and Sofia Tapia are hitting over .300 and more than 20 hits each. Douglas is tied for the team lead with 15 RBIs and Tapia is in the team lead with four home runs.
  • Radford's ERA is second best in the league (2.74), led by Abby Morrow with a team high 1.64 ERA.
  • Morrow ranks second nationally in walks allowed per seven innings (0.52) and only has eight total walks this season.
  • The Highlanders have outscored their competition 20-11 in the fifth inning and 36-23 in the fifth and sixth innings combined.
  • Radford is 7-1 when scoring in the first inning and 11-2 when scoring the first run this season.

SCOUTING WINTHROP
  • Winthrop (13-14, 3-3) went 10-11 in non-conference play, but faced tough competition such as Georgia, USC Upstate and North Carolina.
  • The Eagles took the series opener in the Big South against Charleston Southern, but fell last weekend to Campbell after winning the first game of the series, 5-2.
  • Winthrop has already played three games this week against Coastal Carolina and North Carolina. The Eagles split with CCU and lost to UNC, 10-4.
  • Ashley Westbrooks leads the team in batting average at .337 and is coming off a midweek average of .556 with four runs and three RBI in three games.
  • Morgan Lowers is second on the team with a .322 batting average and third in runs scored with eight.
  • Blake Wallert went 4-for-10 with three runs and five RBIs in last week's games.
