ROAD TO THE BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS WEDNESDAY

RADFORD, Va. – The regular season has ended and it's the time of the year where dreams can become a reality with a chance to make it to an NCAA Regional. Radford's road to the field of 64 begins on Wednesday in a date with No. 6 Winthrop at 2:30 p.m., in the opening round of the Big South Championship at the Radford Softball Stadium.

SETTING THE STAGE

TOURNAMENT HISTORY
  • The Highlanders are 33-40 all-time in Big South Championship contests and made an early exit in 2017 with two consecutive loses.
  • Radford looks for revenge as Winthrop defeated it, 5-0, in the first elimination game last season.
  • As a No. 3 seed, the Highlanders have 10 wins all-time, which is the second most wins only behind a No. 1 seed with 11 wins.
  • When the postseason tournament has been in Radford, the Highlanders are 8-5.

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS
  • Radford (33-17, 13-8) has its first No. 3 seed in the Big South Tournament since 2014.
  • The Highlanders swept the Eagles in Rock Hill, S.C., earlier this season.
  • The team picked up 19 runs on 25 hits and tallied eight extra base hits.
  • Talia Douglas, Sofia Tapia and Maggie Rowe each had two extra base hits. Douglas had two doubles, while Tapia had a double and a triple and Rowe contributed with a double and a home run.
  • Kayla Huffman made two appearances in the series with one complete game and a save. She only allowed three hits and struck out nine through nine innings of work.
  • The Highlanders have outscored teams that are participating in the tournament, 80-40.
  • Hannah Medlam has a team-high 22 of the teams 124 hits against teams in the field.
  • Rowe, Douglas and Hunter Mundy have combined for 39 of the Highlanders 71 RBIs against the other five teams. Mundy also has a team-most three home runs.
  • Kayla Huffman, has posted a 4-2 record with a 1.64 ERA, 43 strikeouts and only six walks allowed against teams that have prolonged their season.
  • For the season, Rowe leads the team with 44 RBIs, which is currently eighth in a single-season at Radford and is six shy of 100 in her career.
  • Abby Morrow has posted 21 wins – that leads the team – for the first time in her career. She ranks third nationally in walks allowed per seven innings (0.74).

SCOUTING WINTHROP
  • No. 6 Winthrop (17-30, 8-10 Big South) lost three in a row to the regular season champions, Liberty.
  • The Eagles needed some help from Radford to get into the Big South Championship. If Charleston Southern would've won one more game in the series, then the Eagles would've fallen to seventh place in the standings and been the first team out of the tournament.
  • Ashley Westbrooks leads the team with a .342 batting average and 53 hits. She has a team-high 12 doubles and has scored 24 runs.
  • Ansley Gilreath has been the power for the Eagles with nine home runs, which leads the team, and 24 RBIs.
  • The team boasts a 3.51 ERA and is led by Sabrina Shroades with a 3.11 ERA and 40 strikeouts.
  • Kiley Majette leads the team with 114 strikeouts and 162.2 innings pitched, but has walked 29 batters.
  • The Eagles are 4-17 in away games, but are 5-3 in neutral settings.
