HIGHLANDERS RECORD STRONG HOKIE INVITE PERFORMANCE

BLACKSBURG, Va - The Radford women's tennis team continued its fall season with the Hokie Invite which began Friday and ended Sunday. Athletes from Virginia Tech, Appalachian State, Marshall, and VCU competed against the Highlanders over the weekend.
 
FRIDAY
The Highlanders began competition with early-morning doubles play. In the 9 a.m., doubles matches, Drousile Dzeubou and Alexis Cramer came up just short 8-6 in a tough match against Marshall while Malin Falk and Katey Fruehauf fell to Marshall as well. The Highlanders came back for the 10 a.m., doubles on fire as Fruehauf and Falk rebounded with a big 8-7 victory over Virginia Tech. Jeanine Acierto and Anastasia Belyaeva also picked up a dominant doubles victory against Virginia Tech 8-2, which led the Highlanders to a 2-1 doubles record against Virginia Tech. Rounding out the morning was Camryn McClure and Marielle Leahy falling in a close match 8-6 against Appalachian State.

The action didn't stop there for the Highlanders as they kicked off singles play at 12:45 p.m. Cramer and Fruehauf picked up singles victories against Virginia Tech, both winning in just two sets. The two singles victories pushed the Highlanders to a 2-1 singles record against their NRV rivals. Belyaeva pushed her opponent from VCU to three sets but came up just short with a final line of 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (7). McClure and Leahy both took on Marshall opponents, but fell in both matches. Dzeubou and Falk both rounded out the day coming up just short against opponents from VCU.

SATURDAY
On the second morning the Highlanders took on Virginia Tech and Marshall again. Falk and Fruehauf rebounded with an intense 8-7 (4) victory over Marshall. The Highlanders dropped their other three doubles matches of the morning, with McClure and Leahy coming up just short (8-6) in a tough battle against Virginia Tech.

The Highlanders kept up the pace against strong competition in singles play with three more victories in the first round of singles on the day. McClure continued her doubles success with a singles win over Marshall with a close 6-2, 7-6 (6) victory. Belyaeva came back after a close loss Friday with a strong 6-4, 6-2 victory over Appalachian State. Falk rounded out the victorious Highlanders with another win against Appalachian State competition, winning 6-3, 7-6 (4).

In the final round of singles, six Highlanders took on New River Valley rivals Virginia Tech and came out victorious winning four of the six matches. Falk edged out her opponent 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (6), while Cramer also went the full three sets pulling out a victory in the end 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (9). Acierto and Freuhauf rounded out the victories both taking just two sets in dominant wins. Belyaeva and Dzeubou took their competition to three sets in an intense match but came up just short, getting close to sweeping the Hokies.

SUNDAY
The Highlanders finished the Hokie Invite with two more sets of doubles against Appalachian State and VCU. The Highlanders took one of three from Appalachian State, with Fruehauf and Falk finishing the doubles part of the tournament strong with a close 8-7 (6) victory. Belyaeva and Acierto also came up just short in their match, dropping it 8-5. McClure and Leahy were the lone Highlanders to take on VCU, and would end up dropping their match, 8-1.

STAT OF THE WEEKEND
Radford went 6-3 in singles matches against the host Virginia Tech over the weekend, with Cramer and Fruehauf both picking up two singles victories against the Hokies.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders will travel back to Blacksburg in a couple weeks to compete in the ITA regionals which run from Friday, Oct. 25 through Tuesday, Oct. 29.
