HIGHLANDERS FALL AT VIRGINIA TECH

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Radford women's tennis team fell to Virginia Tech, 7-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The match began with Anastasia Belyaeva and Jeanine Acierto opening up a 2-0 lead on court 3 in doubles play. On court 1, Drousile Dzeubou and Tyler Blalock also had an early lead. Things were looking good for the Highlanders when Virginia Tech started coming back.

Sarah Baron and the No. 121 singles player in the country, Natalie Novotna, on court 1 came back and defeated Dzeubou and Blalock, 6-4, which would be the deciding doubles point. The Highlanders won the first doubles game as Acierto and Belyaeva kept their lead and won 6-4.

Singles play began and the Hokies took a 3-0 lead when Marielle Leahy – who competed in her first collegiate match – and Katey Fruehauf dropped their matches on court 6 and 5, respectively. The decisive point came on court 4 when Acierto fell to Samantha Gillas (6-2, 6-2).

Malin Falk then fell to Nina Sorkin (6-2, 6-3) and the No. 1 and No. 2 were left to play. Belyaeva was left and gave the No. 121 player in the country a run for her money, but ultimately fell to Novotna, 6-2, 6-4.

Dzeubou gave the Highlanders a fighting chance with a 5-3 lead on court 2, but Nika Kozar came back and took the first set, 7-5. The second set went into a tiebreaker but Kozar won the set, 7-6, with a 7-2 tiebreak win.

The Highlanders will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to UNC Asheville at 3 p.m.
