FISHER, BOND TAKE HOME BIG SOUTH WEEKLY HONORS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After leading the Radford softball team to a 4-1 weekend in the season-opening Seahawk Softball Bash, Sydney Fisher has been named Big South Player of the Week and Brooke Bond has been tabbed as Big South Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.

Fisher donned a Highlanders uniform for the first time after transferring in from Georgia Southern this offseason and immediately made an impact. The sophomore hit .476 with 10 hits in 21 at-bats - including one triple - and was a speed demon on the base paths with nine steals. She also collected a team-high seven runs scored to go along with six RBIs.

"Sydney displayed an all around great performance on our opening weekend," Creasy said. "We are expecting great things from her as we continue our season."

Making her collegiate debut, Bond showed no signs of nerves when Head Coach Hope Creasy called her name in Wilmington. The Hampton, Va., native was chosen to pinch-hit with two runners on base in the seventh inning against Howard and she rose to the occasion with a three-run home run. Then, the very next day, Bond hit a two-run shot in another pinch-hitting situation before staying in the game and a second pair of RBIs with a double. Despite having just four at-bats, the freshman now leads Radford with seven runs batted in.

"Brooke came in as a pinch hitter in multiple occasions and did an outstanding job," Creasy. "We look forward to her impact as the season continues."

Monday marks the first time a Radford player has been selected for Player of the Week honors since Maggie Rowe earned the distinction on Feb. 20, 2017. The Big South has only recognized Freshmen of the Week since the 2017 season, but the Highlanders have now had three different players chosen including Hunter Mundy (twice in 2017) and Talia Douglas (twice in 2018).

The Highlanders took home wins over UNCW, Rhode Island and Howard (2x) this weekend, outscoring its opponents 46-14 across five games. They will now turn their attention to the Holy City Showdown, a tournament hosted by College of Charleston, which is scheduled to take place between Thursday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 23.
