MOSQUERA QUINTAS CAPTURES FIRST CAREER INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP; LEADS RADFORD TO SECOND-PLACE FINISH AT BENBOW INVITATIONAL

Results

JACKSONVILLE, Fl. - Freshman sensation Beatriz Mosquera Quintas won her first career tournament as the native of La Coruna, Spain defeated 50 competitors at the 2019 Benbow Invitational, which was held at Blue Sky Golf Club.

Mosquera Quintas fired a 73 (+1) on the par 72, 6,143-yard course to grab a share of a four-way tie for the top of the leaderboard yesterday and was even better on Tuesday, finishing with a  71 (-1) for a two-day score of 144 (even). She finished five strokes ahead of her closest competitor, Laila Fortsmane from Eckerd College

"Today was a dream come true," said Mosquera Quintas. "I've been working so hard and to finally capitalize after being close in the fall feels wonderful. As a team our hard work is paying off and we continue to gain confidence, so anything is possible."

The Highlanders finished second out of eight squads with a combined total of 617 (311-306). Youngstown State won the event with a score of 606 (298-308). The squad has four Top 3 finishes, including two runner-up finishes over their last four tournaments.

"Today was a tale of two nines," Highlander head coach Jeff Beeler explained. "Other than Beatriz we got off to a horrendous start on our opening nine. We knew coming down the stretch we had plenty of opportunities to make up ground.

"We were absolutely flawless on our back nine which led to an even par side," Beeler continued. We've really started to play well our last four events. This group loves representing Radford University and they leave it all out on the course for one another."

Sidney Walker (78-79-157) and Riko Nagai (78-79-157) tied for 16th-place as they were extremely impressive as well.

Kasidy Beckel (T-20, 82-77-159) and Natalie Welsh (T-33, 82-83-165) rounded out the scoring.

Hannah Tuttle (79-81-160) competed as an individual.
