 SOFTBALL


at Buzz Classic

  • A new season is on the horizon as the Radford softball team gears up for the 2021 season.
  • The team was picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll but boasts the Preseason Player of the Year in Sydney Fisher.
  • The team has six returning starters in the everyday starting lineup that play in the field and returns all of the key elements in the pitching game.
  • Jessie Marvin returns as the staff leader after hurling five complete games (46.1 innings) and touting a 1.81 ERA with 30 strikeouts and an 8-1 record.
  • Talia Douglas is back after hitting .444 last season with nine extra base hits and 13 RBIs.
  • Radford will open the season at the Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech. Creasy will meet former coaching mate, Aileen Morales (former head coach at Radford) on the diamond as DI head coaches for the first time this season.
  • Georgia Tech leads the all-time series with Radford 7-1, while the Highlanders beat Georgia State in their only all-time meeting in 2017. Radford and Boise State will meet for the first time on Sunday.

  • The Sherisa Livingston and Greg Manos has started off on a two-game winning streak for the Highlanders. 
  • Radford took the season series from Gardner-Webb with match scores of 3-1 and 3-0.
  • The Highlanders have began the season 2-0, matching their start to the 2018 season. 
  • Charleston Southern is also off to a great start, sweeping the 2019 Big South Tournament Champions, Winthrop. 
 WOMEN'S SOCCER

  • For the first time ever the Radford women's soccer team will compete for a Big South title in the spring but first the team will have one non-conference game against Roanoke College.
  • The reigning Big South Tournament champions were picked to finish second in the preseason poll and boast the Preseason Attacking Player of the Year in Gabi Paupst and the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Kayla Thomas.
  • It's the first time the Highlanders have touted both preseason player of the year picks since the conference implementation of the two.
  • Paupst is Radford's returning leading scorer with nine goals and five assists totaling 23 points.
  • Lily McLane had a lot to do with those goals with eight assists last season – the most on the team. She returns for her senior season.
  • Kayla Thomas logged 90+ minute matches 19 times last season and was a crucial part to the team's 10 shutouts last year.

  • Radford will take the field of competition after almost a year long hiatus due to cancelations relating to COVID-19. 
  • The Highlanders were picked in the 2021 Big South preseason poll to finish fourth, tying their highest ranking, in the league with juniors Katie Bendrick and Grace Gleason nabbed All-Big South honors. 
  • Radford was enjoying a two-game win streak with an overall record of 3-6 in 2020. 
  • Richmond was a perfect 7-0 last season and will be looking to start the 2021 campagin in a similar manner.

at Inaugural Highlander Invitational - Friday, February 12th
Where: Radford, Va.

Start Times: Women at 3 p.m. and Men at 3:45 p.m.

  • The Highlanders will host the Inaugural Highlander Invitational this Friday, their first hosted event on the cross country side in over 20 years.
  • Radford will be collecting donations for the women's resource center at the invitational, with all other teams competing agreeing to participate together. 
  • Two weeks ago at the Big South Preview, the Highlanders placed second on the women's side and second on the men's side as well.
  • Rachel Millirons grabbed the top spot out of all runners with a time of 18:03.1, which is also fourth-fastest in program history in the 5k.
  • Callym Wilson was the top performer on the men's side, breaking his previous personal best time in the 8k by 25 seconds to place fifth overall in the event.
  • UNC Asheville, Longwood, and Winthrop will also be competing in the event, with the women starting at 3 p.m. and the men at 3:45 p.m.

at VMI Winter Classic – Friday, February 12th

  • Radford is on to their next competition after many Highlanders made their debuts last week.
  • Taylor Tinsley matched her indoor personal best mark in the high jump last week at the Brant Tolsma Invite.
  • Maddie Wright also set a new personal record in the 60-meter hurdles while Breauna Lane edged out her previous personal best-time in the 400-meter.
  • This will be the Highlanders second indoor meet of the brief indoor season at the Corps Physical Training Facility.
  • Competition will take place throughout Friday and Saturday, with many Highlanders looking to continue to improve and gear up for the upcoming outdoor season.
