Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Highlanders Come Up Short in Exciting Finish Against Hampton

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford Women's Basketball program came up just short Thursday night 54-51 against Hampton. Radford had a chance to tie in the closing seconds after an incredible defensive effort in the fourth quarter, but the three-pointer just missed the mark.

Destinee Marshall and Bridget Birkhead got the scoring started in the game for the Highlanders as the duo combined for five points to give Radford the early 5-2 lead. An Ashley Tudor layup gave Radford back the lead a 7-6, but an 8-0 run by the Lady Pirates gave them a commanding lead they would not relinquish.

Tudor converted a big and-one to finish the first quarter, but Hampton came into the second quarter continuing to pound the paint with three quick baskets to build their lead. Bryonna McClean also entered early in the second quarter for her first appearance since January 29th and immediately converted a basket off an inbound pass for Radford.

Hampton was able to convert the two lone three-pointers they took in the first half, shooting 55% overall throughout the first 20 minutes. The Highlanders would go into halftime trailing 39-28 and would rally their defense to mount the comeback.

Radford's defense held Hampton to single digit points in the third and fourth quarter allowing Radford the perfect opportunity to strike. Jackie Christ and Marshall opened the second half with back-to-back layups to cut into the lead, but the Highlanders were also held scoreless for five minutes with Tudor breaking up the drought with a pair of made free throws.

To end the third quarter, Hampton committed a foul on Danielle Montelbano as she attempted a half court shot, allowing the Highlanders to draw two points closer to just a 47-39 deficit headed into the fourth quarter.

After a flurry of scoring to start the fourth quarter, neither team scored for five minutes. Hampton broke the big drought with a bucket and Marshall was able to respond drawing a foul and hitting a free throw. Morgan nailed two free throws and Tudor hit a huge three-pointer to make it a three-point deficit with under a minute to go. Radford got the defensive stop they needed and was set to try and tie. The shot with the seconds winding down wouldn't hit, however, as Hampton held on to win 54-51.

Inside the box score, Tudor highlighted the stat sheet with her double-double and three blocks. Morgan also made it back-to-back games with double-digit points. As a team, the Highlanders collected a season-high nine blocks with six players recording a block. Radford had 31 points off the bench thanks in large part to Tudor and Morgan, outscoring Hampton's bench by 16 points.
