Smith and Marvin Collect Big South Weekly Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced Monday afternoon that Rachel Smith had been named Big South Player of the Week, her second straight week with a weekly honor, while Jessie Marvin had been named Big South Co-Pitcher of the Week for the first time in her career.

Smith made it back-to-back weeks earning Big South weekly honors after another incredible weekend at the plate. The Reidsville, N.C. native hit .750 against North Carolina A&T with six hits, three RBIs, two home runs and six runs scored. Her two walks also made it so she reached base in eight of her ten plate appearances.

Smith's seven home runs now rank second on the team with her 15 walks also ranking second. She continues to prove time and time again her skill at not just getting on base but scoring those in front of her.

Jessie Marvin is the first Radford pitcher to earn weekly honors since 2019 as the veteran went out with a bang in her final games on the home field last weekend. In the series opener against North Carolina A&T, Marvin went 6.2 innings without allowing a hit to lead Radford to victory. Getting the starting nod on Senior Day Marvin was flawless once again throwing 4.1 innings of scoreless work to again earn the win, her tenth of the season.

Marvin currently ranks sixth in the program for strikeouts, fifth in career starts, sixth in wins, sixth in complete games, tied for fourth in shutouts and sixth in innings pitched. This season she's led the pitching staff with 139.2 innings pitched while racking up a career-high 103 strikeouts and a 2.96 ERA.

The Highlanders start postseason play this Wednesday in the opening day of action for the Big South Tournament in Farmville, Va. The Big South is set to announce the tournament pairings at 5 p.m. later today, May 9th.
