Let's Run It Back: The Radford women's basketball team began their 55th season and 41st at the NCAA Division I level on Monday, falling in a hard-fought loss to Wake Forest, 71-64, in Winston-Salem. The Highlanders look to avoid starting the season 0-2, which last occurred during the 2021-22 season (L 82-63 at Pittsburgh, L 68-64 vs. Marshall). Georgia Tech begins the Karen Blair era today after long-time Head Coach Nell Fortner announced her retirement last March. This is the first meeting between the two schools in women's hoops. It's also Radford's first women's basketball game in the state of Georgia since traveling to Statesboro to face Georgia Southern on January 3, 1992 (L 86-82). This is the first time Radford has opened with consecutive road games since going to North Carolina (L 90-61) and Marshall (L 69-58) to begin the 2020-21 season.

McGuire Milestone Watch: With a win, Head Coach Mike McGuire will tie Radford Hall of Famer and first women's basketball coach Pat Barrett (1971-84) with 193 career victories. McGuire begins his 13th season leading the program and is the longest tenured active coach in the Big South. He's looking for his fourth triumph against a power opponent, having beaten Wake Forest (2016-17), Penn State (2017-18), and Virginia (2018-19).

Georgia on my Mind: Freshman Georgia Simonsen made a big impact for the Highlanders in her first collegiate game, leading the team with nine rebounds and tying for the team lead with 11 points. Simonsen is the first freshman to total double digits in scoring in the opening game since Joi Williams scored 14 and Terissa Lavoile-Brice added 10 vs. Concord on Nov. 6, 2023. Welcome Back, Ellie: Grad student Ellie Taylor made her return for the Highlanders after missing the 2024-25 season due to an injury suffered in the 2023-24 season finale in the Big South Tournament. Taylor totaled 11 points which included some points in the paint and a three-pointer.

Joi to the World: Junior Joi Williams converted from beyond the arc three times for 11 points in the loss to Wake Forest. She now has 102 made three-pointers in her career at Radford, just outside the top 10 all-time. Her 313 career three-point attempts ranks seventh on the Radford career list.
