Big South Play Arrives for Men’s Basketball at USC Upstate

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's basketball program begins the Big South portion of their schedule on the road this New Year's Eve, visiting USC Upstate for a 2 p.m. tip on ESPN+.

A LOOK BACK
The Highlanders and Spartans meet for the 14th time in program history on Wednesday, with all 14 meetings coming in Big South play dating back to when USC Upstate joined the Big South in 2018-19. Since then, Radford has been dominant, owning an 11-2 edge which includes a three-game winning streak dating back to the 2023-24 season. The Highlanders also own a 5-1 record inside the G.B. Hodge Center.

FRESHMEN STEP UP
Radford got most of the holiday week off but regrouped at home for one more nonconference battle against Shenandoah where the freshmen shined. Gabriel Ferreira led the way with his career day, setting new highs in his young career for points (12) and rebounds (8). Frederik Erichsen had himself another great showing, using an efficient shooting performance to finish with a career-high 15 points.

START CONFERENCE PLAY STRONG
Radford will look to do something on Wednesday that they haven't been able to do since the 2021-22 campaign, win their conference opener. To kick off the 21-22 conference slate, Coincidentally, Radford opened on the road at USC Upstate and came out with the 82-77 win. Since then, however, the Highlanders have dropped three straight openers including a game at UNC Asheville and twice against High Point.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
The Spartans are off to a solid start under head coach Marty Richter, who is in his second season at the helm. In nonconference play, USC Upstate compiled an 8-7 record with notable victories against Fresno State, Coastal Carolina and Western Carolina. Jafeth Martinez is currently the leading blocker in-conference, averaging 1.8 per game. Overall, the team ranks top three in-conference for opponent points per game, opponent shooting percentage, rebounding and blocks.
