Softball Splits Day Two at Hokie Invite, Earns Power Victory over Boston College

| BOX SCORE 2 SALEM, Va. – The Radford softball program picked up another key victory Saturday afternoon at the Hokie Invite, picking up their first power victory of the season over Boston College 3-2. In the night cap against #11 Virginia Tech, Radford played tough but came up short 8-2.

GAME ONE
In Saturday's opener, Radford got a big hit early and big pitching late to pick up their first power victory of the season over Boston College. Right away in the first, Radford got rolling with a pair of big runs. After Grace Hogie singled, Hailey Scott hit a big two-run home run to right that put the Highlanders up 2-0.

Starting pitcher Morgan Cooper had a big bounce back game for Radford and began it with a clean first inning. Malli Groves would begin the second with a single and move to second on a groundout. After being replaced on the bases, Radford pushed for a run on a hit to center but the runner was cut down at the plate to keep the score at 2-0.

After a three-up, three-down bottom of the second by Cooper, Radford added a big run in the third. After singles by Amber Wolfe and Scott, Radford looked to scratch across a run with two outs. Amanda Lee had the big swing, driving in Scott to extend Radford's lead to 3-0.

Cooper would retire the side in the third, but Boston College struck for a two-run homer in the fourth that forced a change in the circle. Radford called in Madison Sabo who worked around two baserunners to preserve the lead. In the fifth and sixth, Sabo cruised retiring eight straight batters going into the final inning.

Radford had a chance to add an insurance run the seventh, but an unfortunate double play ball wiped the opportunity. The Eagles would begin the seventh with a ground ball hit through the right side, but Sabo shut things down from there retiring three straight to clinch the 3-2 victory over Boston College.

GAME TWO
Radford's offense looked to get off to a strong start against #11 Virginia Tech in game two as Peyton Simmons singled and Hogie walked. An unfortunate double play ended Radford's threat, but the Highlanders responded well in the bottom half as Dakota Redmon began her day with a clean first.

The Hokies would strike for their first run in the second via an RBI single. In the third, Virginia Tech scratched across another run after three straight hits. Redmon induced two groundouts to keep it just a 2-0 deficit into the fourth.

The Hokies would break things open in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a pair of homers including a grand slam that made it 8-0. Cooper was able to enter and end the inning as the Highlanders fought to keep the game alive in the fifth.

Radford would do just that taking advantage of an early throwing error. A bunt single by Simmons move Bechtol to third and she would come home off a sacrifice fly by Amber Wolfe. In the sixth, Radford got back another run after an Abby Bossler single and RBI double from Lee. Cooper kept things quiet on the defensive end, but Radford fell short in the end 8-2.

UP NEXT
Radford has one game left on the weekend in what's sure to be another exciting battle as they face James Madison tomorrow with an 11 a.m. first pitch.
