RADFORD, Va. – Freshman shortstop
Jeff Kemp's (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) single to score a pair in the eighth opened up a five-run inning and pushed Radford to a Big South series sweep of VMI with a 10-4 win on Sunday at Radford University Baseball Field.
The Highlanders (18-14, 10-6 Big South) had their fourth league series win this season with a sweep of the Keydets (13-25, 7-10), Radford's second of the year.
Kemp, who went 1-for-5, dropped a hit into right center field to plate freshman second baseman
Brett Mollenhauer (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) and junior center fielder
Tyren Rivers (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River), giving Radford a 6-4 lead. Two batters earlier, Rivers tied the game at 4-4 when he sent a bunt between the pitcher and third baseman, all the way to the shortstop, scoring redshirt junior
Raphael Turner (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson).
Radford added two more runs that inning, expanding its lead to 8-4.
Five Highlanders had multi-hit afternoons, led by senior third baseman
Nick Minter's (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) 3-for-4 effort with a pair of runs driven in. Minter had RBI singles in the seventh and eighth innings, adding insurance for Radford.
Keen, Mollenhauer, senior first baseman
Alex Gregory (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI) and freshman designated hitter
Matt Hillsinger (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had two hits each.
Senior right-hander
Josh Hammonds (Herndon, Va./Herndon) earned the win (2-0) with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, coming on in the seventh inning with a man in scoring position to keep the game tied at 4-4. Redshirt freshman righty
Abram Williams (Radford, Va./Radford) lasted 6 2/3 innings in a quality start, allowing two earned runs and striking out four.
VMI was led at the plate by multi-RBI efforts from third baseman Tanner Biagini and left fielder Brian Sandridge. Biagini, who went 1-for-4, banged a two-run double to right field with two outs in the seventh to give the Keydets a 4-3 lead. VMI put both the tying and go-ahead runs on base with two away in the top of the seventh, including a single through the right side by right fielder Sam Roberts to keep the inning alive.
Roberts finished the day 3-for-5.
Sandridge did all of his damage with two outs, hitting his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field, in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2. His RBI single with two away in the fourth tied the game at 1-1.
Righty Michael Devine took the loss (0-3) for the Keydets, lasting an inning and two-thirds in relief and allowing three runs on four hits.
After Radford opened the scoring with Hillsinger's RBI single through the right side in the second to plate Gregory, the Highlanders added runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Mollenhauer's hit through the right side in the fifth brought home senior left fielder
Mario Duarte (Tampa, Fla./Gaither), and Gregory added another to make it 3-2, Radford, in the sixth when he scored on a wild pitch, after singling with two down in the inning.
Radford continues a four-game homestand Tuesday, hosting Davidson at 3 p.m.
