ASHEVILLE, N.C. - No. 2 Winthrop pounded out 21 runs on 26 hits, including three homers, and eliminated No. 4 Radford from the 2009 Big South baseball tournament, 21-3, on Friday at McCormick Field.
Radford (26-24) concludes the season with its most wins since 2000 and the program's fifth winning season since 1985.
The Eagles (34-24) move on to Saturday action at the Big South tournament.
Eight players turned in multi-hit efforts for Winthrop, highlighted by a 5-for-6 performance from second baseman Bryn Henderson, including his two homers. Henderson drove in seven. Shortstop Kevin Nolan had a 4-for-6 day, scoring four runs and driving in two.
Radford had 10 hits, led by freshman second baseman
Brett Mollenhauer's (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) 2-for-4 day. Junior first baseman
Rick Hoogstraten (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) drove in two runs on a fifth-inning double.
The Highlanders led 1-0 on senior first baseman
Alex Gregory's (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI) RBI single with two outs in the first, but Eagles got five in the second to open up the scoring, including 21 of the next 23 runs.
The Eagles added three in the third, five in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Right-hander Wade Newman turned in a solid start for Winthrop to earn the win (7-4), tossing seven strong innings while allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out four.
