GAME 1 BOX | GAME 2 BOX
RADFORD, Va. – Radford got walk-off wins in each game of a doubleheader on Sunday, winning 4-3 and 1-0 (8 innings) to complete a three-game non-conference sweep of Rider.
In the first game,
Robert Lamas executed a squeeze bunt to push across the winning run and Reggie Keen's walk-off single with two outs in the ninth lifted the Highlanders (6-7) to an extra-inning victory over Rider (5-6) in the second game.
With the series sweep, the Highlanders have won three straight games for the first time this season.
“We got four beautiful pitching appearances today and whenever you give up three runs in two games, that's pretty impressive,” head coach
Joe Raccuia said. “The starts by
Bobby Bolling and
Eddie Butler, and relief appearances by
Jason Patten and
Abram Williams, were key. You win with pitching and defense, and that's how we won all weekend.”
GAME 1 - RADFORD 4, RIDER 3
Radford completed a one-out safety squeeze play in the ninth inning with Lamas pushing across
Phil Bondi to give the Highlanders a walk-off win.
With one away in the ninth,
Ryan Burgess, who represented the winning run, doubled to shallow left field and moved to third when
Andrew Cook singled to the right side, putting runners at the corners for Radford.
Lamas then pushed a bunt down the first base line to score Bondi, who pinch-ran on the play, giving the Highlanders their second straight win.
Abram Williams picked up the win (2-1) with three shutout innings of relief, striking out three while holding the Broncs to just two hits.
Tyler Smith, who worked the final inning and a third and kept the game tied heading into the ninth, was charged with the loss (0-1).
Matt Mack went 2-for-4 to lead Radford in game one, including a seventh-inning solo homer to right field that cut Rider's lead to 3-2. Following Mack's home run, Highlanders put the next two hitters on before
Cory Turner singled home
Raphael Turner with his first collegiate hit, tying the game at 3-3.
The Broncs got all three of their runs in the second inning, capitalizing on back-to-back one-out walks and two wild pitches. John Ralston, the first Rider hitter to walk in the second, scored on Karl Johnston's fielder's choice groundout. Brandon Cotten's double to left scored Mike O'Reilly, the second hitter to walk in the inning, giving the Broncs a 2-0 lead. Johnston then scored on a wild pitch on the next play to put Rider up by three.
GAME 2 (8 innings) - RADFORD 1, RIDER 0
Keen's walk-off single accounted for the only run of the game, and
Bobby Bolling threw seven scoreless innings to help the Highlanders to a game two win.
Keen looped a single to the shallow right field gap with two outs in the eighth to bring home
Tyren Rivers. Rivers put himself in scoring position after a one-out single by stealing second base, and advancing to third on Brett Mollenhauer's groundout.
Bolling went a season-long seven innings, allowing just two hits.
Jason Patten, who worked a scoreless eighth, earned his first win of the season (1-1).
Rider lefty Patrick Devlin matched Bolling's scoreless frames, going six while striking out six Radford hitters. Mike Murphy pitched the final inning and two-thirds, taking the loss (0-1).
