Box Score
CLEARWATER, Fla. – Central Michigan scored three two-out runs in the first inning and held on for a 3-2 victory over Radford on Sunday afternoon from the USF Under Armour Showcase at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
CMU (4-6) jumped on Radford starter
Heather Paquette (Mississauga, Ontario/Streetsville Secondary) for those three two-outs run in the bottom of the first. Amanda Patrick doubled in the first two and scored eventual game-winner two batters later on a wild pitch.
Radford (4-6) took advantage of three walks and two passed balls to get a run back in the top of the second. With two outs and the bases full, junior
Shannon Keefe (Lemont Township, Ill./Ill.) scooted home on a passed ball.
A one-out double by junior
Kristen Shifflett (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello), followed by a single up the middle by sophomore
Nichole Beall (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) cut Central Michigan's lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth.
That would be all for Radford as CMU starter Kari Seddon retired eight of the last nine Highlander batters to hold off any comeback attempt.
Seddon picked up the complete game win for the Chippewas, allowing an earned run on three hits. She struck out six and walked five.
Radford's comeback chance was made possible by five innings of shutout relief from juniors
Chelsea Kelley (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) and
Kellie Snooks (Alsip, Ill./Marist).
After Paquette surrendered three runs, two earned, on three hits, Kelley went the next four and allowed just one hit with four strikeouts. Snooks tossed a scoreless sixth with a punch out.
Shifflett, Beall and junior
Taylor Cunningham (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary) each recorded a hit for the Highlanders.
Radford returns to action on Tuesday, March 9 for a pair of contest against Boston University and Ball State at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Clearwater, Fla.
