RADFORD, Va. – Sarah Himan's (Woodbridge, Va./Hylton) two-out walk-off double helped Radford rally past Gardner-Webb in game two and complete the doubleheader sweep, Friday afternoon from RU Softball Field. In game one,
Chelsea Kelley tossed a one-hit shutout in the Highlanders' 3-0 victory.
Trailing 2-1 and not generating any scoring opportunities since the first inning, Radford (19-10, 7-1 Big South) mustered its seventh inning comeback. With one out,
Taylor Cunningham and
Lauren Williams recorded back-to-back singles to left.
After Cunningham was erased at third on a fielder's choice,
Nichole Beall drew a walk to load the bases. Himan stepped up and laced the first pitch she saw to the fence in right center for the game-winner.
Himan was 3-for-4 with those two RBI, while Cunningham registered a pair of singles for the Highlanders.
Kellie Snooks picked up the win, allowing an earned run on four hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Cindy Broomhower suffered the defeat. She scattered nine hits, struck out five and walked two.
Lindsea Hutchinson homered and scored both of the Bulldogs' (11-22, 1-3) runs and knocked in one.
In game two, the Highlanders scored early plating a run in the first on an RBI single by Beall. After
Kristen Shifflett single to right, stole second and moved to third on an overthrow, Beall fisted a single over the drawn-in infield to knock in Shifflett.
Gardner-Webb tied it in the third. Hutchinson reached on an error to open the inning and with one out, scored on a double to center by Jordyn Arrowood.
Hutchinson put the Bulldogs on top, 2-1, in the fifth with a solo home run to leftcenter.
Kelley tossed a one-hit gem and Radford hit three solo home runs win game one, 3-0.
Kelley recorded six perfect innings and struck out three with no walks. The only hit and base runner she allowed was a leadoff double to Hutchinson in the third.
After Hutchinson doubled and was sacrificed to third, Kelley bore down and induced a pop up and then Williams snagged a line shot at the warning track to end the inning.
Shannon Keefe broke the scoreless deadlock in the fourth with a solo blast over the jogging track in leftcenter.
Home runs on back-to-back pitches by Beall and Himan with out in the sixth gave Radford its 3-0 cushion. Beall retook the team lead with her 10th of the season.
Himan recorded two of Radford's seven hits.
Christine Murray pitched effectively over 5.1 innings for the Bulldogs, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and zero walks. Kara Buchanan tossed the final 0.2 innings giving up a run on two hits.
The teams will conclude their series at RU Softball Field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
