BOX SCORE
LEXINGTON, Va. – Radford blasted four home runs on 20 hits and got three RBIs from four different players in a 15-6 Big South baseball win over VMI on Saturday.
Right-handed starter
Eddie Butler made the offensive outburst stand up for the Highlanders (23-19, 10-7), going six innings and striking out six Keydets (29-16, 10-10) while allowing two earned runs on six hits. Butler earned his first win since March 27 (5-3).
Offensively, the Highlanders got a two-homer output from
Raphael Turner – a solo blast in the fourth and a two-run shot in the sixth that gave Radford an 8-5 lead. Turner finished the day 3-for-5, extending his hitting streak to 15 games.
Matt Mack and
Alex Guerra each went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and a homer – Mack's three-run shot in the ninth with no one out capped the scoring for Radford at 15-6, and Guerra's leadoff homer in the third put the Highlanders ahead, 4-1.
"Our right-handed hitters took and outstanding approach at the plate today," head coach
Joe Raccuia said. "We took the best pitches away from the starter [Jason] Farley. I thought we left some runs on the board early, but we got those back later without any problem."
Robert Lamas added three RBIs, including two on a double to the left field corner in the second inning that gave Radford an early lead.
Tyren Rivers had a 3-for-6 day and a stolen base, and
Brett Mollenhauer tied a school record with four bases on balls, a record set in 1994 by Denny Van Pelt.
"So many guys performed today, that there are too many to name," Raccuia said. "Everybody up and down the board did something, and we were outstanding. We're swinging the bats well and playing good baseball right now."
Radford had a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, before the Keydets scored four runs on three singles, including Jordan Ballard's that plated two with two outs and tied the game at 5-5.
But the Highlanders answered in the top of the sixth with three, on Turner's homer and
Reggie Keen's (Danville, Va./G.W.-Danville) RBI single to take back the lead for good.
VMI was led by two hits each from Sam Roberts and Rob Dickinson. The Keydets have dropped 11 in a row.
Ryan Barefoot was tagged for three runs on three hits in two and a third innings, including the decisive sixth, to take the loss (0-1). The Keydets issued 10 walks as a staff.
The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m.
