STRONG FINISHES HIGHLIGHT OPENER FOR SWIMMING & DIVING


RADFORD, Va. – Radford swimming and diving recorded some strong individual performances in its season-opening quad meet Saturday evening from the Dedmon Center Natatorium. The Highlanders played host to JMU, Campbell and Marshall.

Juniors Emily Turner (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical) and Colleen Miller (Kent Island, Md.), along with sophomore Jessica Frazelle (Lexington, N.C./West Davidson) posted second place finishes. Turner added two more fifth place times
 
The 200 freestyle relay, consisting of the previously mentioned trio and freshman Claire Doherty (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) and the 200 medley team of Miller, Frazelle, freshman Jocelyn Long (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) and senior Cece de la Garza (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) each charted six place finishes.
 
Miller's (featured pic) performance of 1:01.92 in the 200 backstroke was part of the closest
race of the day. She finished just .25 seconds out of the top spot and edged out JMU's Andrea Criscuolo by .04 seconds for second.
 
Turner (pictured right) garnered her second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.67, and posted 25.48 and 1:00.58 marks in the 50 free and 100 butterfly, respectively, for two fifths.
 
Frazelle rounded out the top-five finishes with a 2:12.97 second-place performance in the 200 backstroke.

Radford was defeated overall by JMU (253-47), Campbell (174-106) and Marshall (210-84). JMU also defeated Marshall, 211-89 and Campbell, 236-62, while the Thundering Herd downed the Camels, 174-106.
 
Radford returns to the pool in two weeks when it hosts Pfeiffer and VMI on Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. in the Dedmon Center Natatorium.
