RADFORD COMES HOME NINTH AT CCSA CHAMPIONSHIPS

ATHENS, Ga. –
A sixth-place finish in the three-meter and ninth-place finishes in 400-yd freestyle relay and 200-yard backstroke propelled the Radford swimming and diving team to a ninth-place showing at the 2011 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Championships.

The Highlanders scored 147 team points, beating Howard (119), VMI (57) and North Carolina A&T (52).

Florida Gulf Coast swept the charts with 879.50 points for its third CCSA Championship. Davidson followed with 585 points, while Gardner-Webb took third with a score of 488.50. Georgia Southern placed fourth with 456 points and in fifth with 286 points was North Florida. Liberty placed sixth (184), while College of Charleston followed in seventh (232) and Campbell eighth (176).

On the three-meter board, Katie Shaffer recorded a score of 231.45 to advance to the finals, where she posted a score of 238.10 to place sixth. Skye Hickling followed behind placing ninth with a score of 207.00 to end her first year as a collegiate diver.

Freshman Jessica Frazelle set a new personal-best by improving almost six seconds in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:06.92, while the Radford's "A" Team consisting of Emily Turner, Dixie Mitchell, Meaghan Rowley and Frazelle swam its fastest time of the season in the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 3:38.14 to place ninth as well.

On Thursday, Turner set a new personal-best of 2:09.91 in the 200-yard IM finals before setting two new personal-bests in the 400-yard IM and 100-yard butterfly with the times of 4:38.88 and 1:00.19, bettering her pervious times by almost seven seconds combined.

Also in the 400-yard IM, Ashley Maness improved her personal-best by eight seconds with a time of 4:52.25.

Mitchell recorded two personal-bests when she touched the wall at the 24.98 mark on Thursday and on Friday in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.05.
