CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Chris Dobbins and
Phillip Hovatter picked up wins in the 110m hurdles and long jump to highlight the conclusion of the storm-shortened Kent Taylor-Joe Hilton Invitational this weekend.
Some events were not contested due to severe weather outbreaks in the Chapel Hill area.
Dobbins placed second in the prelims with a 14.45 time and outraced everyone in the finals at 14.61 to take home his first 110m hurdles title. Hovatter eclipsed his previous personal-best in the long jump by seven inches to also bring home gold. Alongside the long jump, Hovatter also finished runner-up in the triple jump, leaping to another personal-best 14.00m/45'11.25”.
Bryan Wallace finished right behind Hovatter in the long jump in second, posting another 7.00m-plus performance.
Elsewhere on the men's side,
Kaise White recorded another strong showing in the 200m, racing to a 22.15 second-place finish.
Raschad Kelso wrapped up the 400m in third with a time of 49.22.
Coming off his record-breaking 400m hurdles time at Winthrop, junior
Brett Olinger recorded another Top 3 performance with the second best mark in program history (52.79).
Highlighting the men's field events was
Curtis Hodge's 55.70m/182'9” distance in the hammer throw, placing third. It stood as Hodge's fifth consecutive Top 3 mark.
In the women's hammer throw,
Aimee Veatch recorded a 51.18m/167'11” mark to edge out eight other competitors and finish fourth overall.
The freshmen women had a solid showing with a limited number of competitors. Freshman Lakei Crews finished third in the 100m at 12.82 and classmate
Courtni Pannell finished fourth in the 100m hurdles at 15.01.
Kaleice Green tossed a personal-best 10.88m/35'8.50” in the shot put to finish third and
Samantha Reddington had a third-place showing as well in the 400m hurdles, crossing the line in 1:09.03.
The next meet for Radford will come at the 2011 Big South Outdoor Championships, beginning Thursday morning at 9 a.m. with the men's javelin. The competition will take place on the campus of VMI at H.M. "Son" Read '16 Memorial Track.
