GORWITZ QUALIFIES FOR JUNIOR NATIONALS AT LIBERTY INVITE

COMPLETE RESULTS

LYNCHBURG, Va. –
Freshman Brian Gorwitz won the 5000m for the second consecutive meet and qualified for USA Junior Nationals to accentuate the final day of competition at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.

Fresh off winning the 5000m at the Winthrop Invitational last weekend, his first collegiate victory, he then backed that up with a 15:04.42 to take the crown at Liberty.  Gorwitz will now compete this summer at USA Junior Nationals, along with Amber Church, who qualified last week in the 100-meter hurdles.

“I'm really excited for Brian and it was his goal coming into the season to make Junior Nationals,” said assistant coach Sean Bossman.  “He ran an incredible race and he battled through some distractions in warm-ups.  He puts in the hard work everyday and it shows with him getting better each week.  It's a wonderful thing for Radford University in general to have these athletes reach the highest level of competition like he did today.”

Along with Gorwitz's victory, Brett Olinger won the 400-meter hurdles and Church added a victory in the 100-meter hurdles. Church added another accolade to her collection by way of her first outdoor victory with a 14.85 and Olinger also collected his first win of the outdoor season at 54.20.

Over the two-day event, Radford recorded one school record, three individual victories, four runner-up finishes and three third-place showings.

Britney Whittaker and Sean Shelton each finished runner-up on Saturday.  In the women's 800m, Whittaker crossed the finish line in 2:19.72.  Shelton shared the same fate in the 800m with a season-best time of 1:55.93, just 54 hundredths of a second from taking the win.

Thomas Keefe also added a strong run in the 800m, finishing 14th in a field of 72 competitors at 1:58.88.

In the 400m, senior Raschad Kelso and sophomore Kaise White finished third and fifth with times of 48.17 and 48.65, respectively.

Justin Smith threw well again in the shot put, tossing 15.67m/51'5” which was good for fifth place.  Garrett Knudson launched 14.40m/47'3” in the event to place eighth.

Freshman Chris Dobbins won his heat of the 110-meter hurdles and finished fifth overall with a time of 15.16.

In the jumps, Antonio Miller spanned 14.29m/46'10.75” in the triple to place third.  Bryan Wallace took off and landed a 6.61m/21'8.25” distance in the long jump to finish in a tie for fifth.

The quartet of Olinger, Dobbins, Kelso and Wallace also finished fifth in the 4x100m with a season-best time of 42.41.

Nikki Roseberry and Jessica Barron each placed top-10 in the women's high jump.  Roseberry found herself in eighth place after a 1.63m/5'4.25” leap while Barron cleared the bar at a personal best 1.53m/5'2.25” to finish tenth.

Radford's next meet will come at Rock Hill, S.C. next Saturday, Apr. 8 when it competes in the Carolinas Cup.
