ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford men's track and field team won the Carolina's Cup, the women finished runner-up and
Brett Olinger set a new school record in the 400-meter hurdles Friday afternoon.
In a five-team competition, Radford beat Conference powerhouse Liberty and host Winthrop, totaling 153 team points, 44 points ahead of Winthrop, and the women also beat both teams to finish with 107 points, just behind Gardner-Webb. In total, Radford collected a combined 14 victories.
Olinger's 52.72 was the top time in the meet and also the top mark in school history, surpassing a record in which he already owned.
Bryan Wallace came up two inches shy of the school record in the long jump, leaping 7.29m/23'11” to take the title and the second best mark in program history. Wallace later placed runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking in at a personal-best 14.62.
Brian Gorwitz finished first in the 1500m with a season-best time of 4:02.39, his third consecutive meet with a victory. His first two victories came in the 5000m.
Kaise White and
Raschad Kelso finished back-to-back at the top of the standings in the 400m. White ran a 48.56 while Kelso finished in 49.44. Kelso added a second-place showing in the 200m at 21.67.
In the hammer throw,
Curtis Hodge won his first event as a Highlander, recording a 56.16m/184'3” mark. Junior
Tony Brown also took home top honors in the high jump, clearing 2.00m/6'6.75”.
Sean Domer added another victory to his illustrious career in the javelin. Already the owner of all top-10 marks in program history, Domer's toss of 63.57m/208'7” ranked as the second best distance.
Justin Smith tallied his fourth top-5 shot put performance of the outdoor season, placing second with a throw of 15.60m/51'2.25”.
Relays were extremely strong for Radford as Olinger, White, Kelso and Wallace crossed the finish line ahead of the rest of the field in the 4x100-meter relay, clocking a 41.30. The Highlanders also took the crown in the 4x400m when Olinger,
Sean Shelton, Kelso and White ran a 3:15.07.
Sophomore
Antonio Miller and Brown finished third and fourth in the triple jump with distances of 14.25m/46'9” and 14.13m/46'4.25”, respectively.
In his first-ever collegiate 3000-meter steeplechase,
Sam Keltner placed third finishing in 10:34.76.
Highlighting the best meet thus far on the women's side was
Aimee Veatch, who picked up the top performance in the hammer throw with a distance of 49.40m/162'1”, nearly 14 feet ahead of the next closest competitor.
Nikki Roseberry cleared the high jump bar at 1.65m/5'5”, which was her second outdoor victory this year.
In the 800m,
Britney Whittaker ran a 2:15.92 to claim the top spot in a field of ten runners.
Freshman Lakei Crews recorded the first victory of her career by winning the 100m with a time of 12.46.
Amber Church and
Courtni Pannell finished the 100-meter hurdles at 14.04 and 14.42, respectively. Church was runner-up while Pannell was right behind her in third.
Crews, Church, Pannell and
Diane Wesh combined to run a runner-up 48.62 in the 4x100m. Wesh also continued to improve on her 400m times, this time clocking a 56.94 to finish third.
“We had a lot of great performances today, with especially big days by Amber, Kaise, Bryan and Brett,” commented head coach
Brent Chumbley. “This was a good indication of where we are in our training. With Conference coming in two short weeks, we look to be right on schedule.”
Radford's last tune-up before the Big South Championships will come next weekend, when it competes in the Kent Taylor-Joe Hilton Carolina Invite April 16 at Chapel Hill, N.C.
