SWIMMING & DIVING DEFEATS UNC ASHEVILLE IN HOME OPENER

RADFORD, Va. – Led by seven first and eight second place finishes, Radford swimming and diving defeated UNC Asheville, 123-68, in the Highlanders' (2-0, 2-0 CCSA) home opener on Saturday afternoon from the Dedmon Center Natatorium.

RESULTS

For the second straight meet, senior Emily Turner and freshman Sarah Fredericksen provided a 1-2 punch as they posted a pair of individual victories as well as being members of the triumphant 400 freestyle relay squad.

Fredericksen chopped two more seconds off her school-record time in the 1,000 free (10:57.53) and she posted the second fastest top-10 time in the program's annals with a 2:09.29 in the 200 butterfly. Turner grabbed her second straight victory in the 200 IM (2:14.46) with a three-second improvement from last week and also won the 500 by 28 seconds (5:32.57).

Along with Turner and Frederickson, freshman Mary Flinn touched the pads first for a second consecutive week in the 200 free (1:59.54).

Rounding out the first-place finishes were the 400 medley and freestyle relays. Juniors Jessica Frazelle, Haley Schweitzer, Meaghan Rowley and sophomore Claire Doherty put in a winning time of 4:09.63 in the medley, while Flinn, Fredericksen, Turner and Doherty churned to a 3:46.50 in the free.

Frazelle (200 free), Flinn (200 back), Rowley (50 free), Doherty (200 fly) junior Sydney Sweet in the 500 and 1000 freestyles and sophomore Morgan Sullivan in the 100 free, along with the 400 free relay squad, consisting of Sullivan, sophomore Jessica Baker, freshmen Yvonne Smith and freshman Jordan Jessee turned in second place results.

Rowley and Sullivan were just touched out by .09 and .11 seconds in their respective events by UNC Asheville's Ashley Ireland, who posted times of 25.95 and 57.86 in the 50 and 100 free. Galen Broido earned a one-second victory in the 200 back and Alessandra Troncoso topped the field in the 200 breaststroke for the Bulldogs.

Smith also placed third for the Highlanders in the 50 and 100 free as did Frazelle and Schweitzer in the 200 back and 200 IM, respectively.

Radford heads to CCSA foe Campbell next Saturday, Oct. 27 at 1:00 p.m. for a tri-meet with the Camels and Brenau University.
