SHAFFER 7TH; CAREER BESTS ON DAY 1 OF CCSA CHAMPIONSHIPS


RESULTS

ATHENS, Ga. –
 Katie Shaffer placed seventh in the one-meter diving final and Radford Swimming & Diving recorded three program top-10s as well as several career bests on Day 1 of the 2012 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships at University of Georgia's Gabrielson Natatorium.
 
Shaffer, a senior, posted a 222.00 in the evening finals after she qualified in the afternoon with score of 229.55, the fifth best preliminary mark.
 
In the final race of the evening, the Highlanders' 400 medley relay finished eighth with season-best mark of 4:02.61. The foursome of Jessica FrazelleHaley SchweitzerClaire Doherty and Emily Turner clocked in four seconds faster than any squad this season.


The Highlanders are currently in eighth place (52 points) after one day of competition. They are followed by Campbell University with 40 points, North Carolina A&T w

ith 32 points, Virginia Military Institute with 26 points and Howard University with 22 points.

Radford's 200 freestyle relay opened the competition with a ninth-place showing. The squad of Frazelle, Doherty, Meaghan Rowley and Turner posted a 1:41.46.
 
Freshman Fallon Parker, Rowley, along with seniors Cecilia de la Garza and Madison Mantiply (pictured) all posted top-10 and personal bests in 
their respective events.
 
Parker touched the wall in the 500 freestyle at 5:24.45, chopping over 10 seconds off her previous best. In the 200 IM, de la Garza clocked in at 2:16.09 besting her time of 2:17.81 set a season ago at the 2011 championships.
 
Rowley's 25.29 edged Mantiply's 25.31 for the top Highlander time in the 50 free prelims. Rowley was almost a half-second faster than her previous best, while Mantiply was .25 seconds faster than her top time recorded during the 2009-10 season.

Sophomore Cara Chance and junior Kathryn Ruch also turned in a personal-best in the 50 free with a 26.32.

Day two of the meet kicks off tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the 200 and 400 medley relays, along with the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 800 free relay.
