RADFORD, Va. –
Tyler Costello tossed eight shutout innings,
Brett Mollenhauer had three hits and two-run homer in the fifth inning to get Radford on the board, and the Highlanders picked up a series victory over Bryant with a 10-0 win on Sunday.
Costello (2-0) held Bryant in check, allowing just five hits while striking out three. He set down nine straight hitters from the fifth inning on, while the Highlanders (8-8) put three runs on the board in both the fifth and sixth innings.
“He got us out a couple of jams early and when we had trouble scoring runs in the first four innings, Tyler kept us right there,” head coach
Joe Raccuia said. “Tyler came back after we stranded the bases loaded with no one out in the fourth and immediately put up a zero, which was critical. Then he kept going after we got runs in the fifth.”
Radford put double-digit runs on the board for the second straight game, pounding out 17 hits.
Phil Bondi went 3-for-4 with two RBIs,
Cory Turner went 3-for-4, and
Zach Costello added a 2-for-4 game, scoring twice.
After coming up empty in the fourth, the Highlanders responded in the fifth when
Zach Costello led off with a single, setting the table for Mollenhauer's home run - the third of his career. Radford added another fifth inning run on Bondi's RBI single.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Highlanders added three more –
Zach Costello doubled home
Josh Gardiner following a leadoff walk,
Jeff Kemp hit a sacrifice fly to score Costello, then Bondi added another RBI, this time with two outs.
Up 6-0 in the eighth, the Highlanders batted around and put four more on the board, highlighted by a two-run, pinch-hit double by
Josh Reavis in his first career at-bat.
Bryant right-hander Craig Schlitter took the loss (0-3) – he surrendered four earned runs in five innings.
Radford heads to Virginia Tech for a 5:30 p.m. game on Tuesday, before playing nine of the next 11 at home.
