BASEBALL SWEEPS SATURDAY DOUBLEHEADER FROM HIGH POINT

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2
HIGH POINT, N.C. – Radford scored first in both doubleheader games, posted 32 hits, and rolled to a doubleheader sweep of High Point with an 8-3 win in the first game and a 10-4 victory in the nightcap on Saturday.

Zach Costello went 6-for-10 to lead the Highlanders (17-14, 6-3 Big South) in the twinbill – he hit a solo homer (2) in the second game, drove in three runs, scored four times and stole three bases.  Matt Mack collected four RBIs and went 4-for-10 for Radford.

Both starters earned wins for Radford – Tyler Costello picked up his sixth win in a row (6-0) in the first game, allowing just one run in 7 1/3 innings.   Mark Peterson got his first win (1-1) in the nightcap – Peterson gave up four runs in 6 2/3 innings.

Jason Patten worked out of the bullpen in two games – he didn't allow a base runner in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

“A much different effort today and I'm really proud of our team,” head coach Joe Raccuia said.  “I was very disappointed with last night, but we competed for 18 innings and never took our foot off gas pedal, scoring in nearly every inning.    Our starters were good, the bullpen threw well – we competed hard in both games.”

Sal Pezzino went 5-for-9 in the doubleheader to lead High Point (21-14, 6-3) – Pezzino had eight hits in the series.

GAME 1: Radford 8, High Point 3

Tyler Costello pitched into the eighth inning for the fourth time this season and the Highlanders scored the first three runs of the game to take control in the game one win.

Zach Costello gave his brother run support with a pair of RBIs – Costello had a run-scoring double in the fourth inning to key a two-run frame.  He plated another run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to cap the scoring for Radford.

Costello was one of five Highlanders with multi-hit efforts – Josh Gardiner led the way with a 3-for-5 game at the plate.

In addition, Radford swiped five bases on seven attempts in the game.

The Highlanders put a pair on the board in the first inning – Matt Mack had a two-run single with no one out after singles by Zach Costello and Jeff Kemp to start the game.

Pezzino went 3-for-5 to lead High Point.  Right-handed starter Matt Armstead worked 3 2/3 innings in the loss (3-3), allowing four earned runs on nine hits.

GAME 2: Radford 10, High Point 4

Zach Costello had a 4-for-6 game, Mack went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, and Radford scored three times in the first and seventh innings on the way to the doubleheader sweep.

The Highlanders struck first again – after Costello singled to start the game, a Kemp double on the next play knocked him home to put Radford on the board first.   After Kemp scored on a wild pitch, a Mack single knocked in Cory Turner to make it a 3-0 lead.

The Highlanders added single runs in the third and fourth, but High Point put runs on the board in four straight innings, cutting the lead to 5-4 on Ryne Rush's RBI groundout in the bottom of the fifth.

Radford took control back in the seventh – Brett Mollenhauer singled to bring in Turner, then scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 8-4.  Carl Travers knocked in a run to make it a five-run lead, at 9-4.

Mark Peterson allowed 11 hits through 6 2/3 innings – but put up a scoreless inning in the sixth to stop the High Point scoring, then started a scoreless seventh.

Jacob Newberry pitched five innings in his start for High Point, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits in the loss (3-2).

Radford plays its next six games outside of league play, beginning with Virginia Tech at home on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
