FREDERICKSEN WIN 100 FLY; HIGHLANDERS FALL IN SEASON OPENER TO JMU

RADFORD, Va. –
Sophomore Sarah Fredericksen won the 100 butterfly and three freshmen posted top-10 program times in Radford swimming & diving's season opener against James Madison on Friday evening from Dedmon Center Natatorium. The Dukes won the meet, 166-72.
 
Fredericksen, who won nine overall events last season, brought her total to double figures with a time of 58.91 edging JMU's Shannon Dubay by .17 seconds. Junior Claire Doherty touched the wall in 1:01.05 for a third-place showing and Radford's other top-3 finish.
 
Freshmen Madeline Schouten, Elena Acevedo and Stephanie Lauer all posted the 10th best time in their respective events as Radford's rookie class had a strong showing in their collegiate debuts. Schouten and Acevedo placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.75) and 200 freestyle (2:00.64), respectively and Lauer charted a fifth-place showing in the 1000 free (11:29.53).
 
Senior Haley Schweitzer (200 IM/2:16.94), sophomore Mary Flinn (100 backstroke/1:01.98) and senior Alex Poletti (1-meter/226.85 & 3-meter/193.20) placed fourth in their events.
 
Radford returns to the pool next Friday, Oct. 11 at the Virginia Tech Sprint Challenge and will compete against the hosts Hokies, North Carolina, Liberty, JMU and VMI.
