SWIMMING FINISHES THIRD AT HIGHLANDER INVITATIONAL

RADFORD, Va. –
Radford swimming closed out the Highlander Invitational on Saturday at the Dedmon Center Natatorium. Behind a pair of two-three finishes on day three, the Highlanders placed third with 643.5 points.
 
Campbell University won the meet with 1,051.5 points and Mount St. Mary's was the runner-up with 704 points. Rounding out the scores were UNC Asheville (490), Millersville (394) and North Carolina A&T (137).
 
In all, Radford swimmers recorded nine top-10 program times and several others swam either season or personal bests.
 
In the 200 back final, sophomore Mary Flinn and senior Jessica Frazelle went second (2:11.71) and third (2:13.26) as did sophomore Sarah Fredericksen and junior Claire Doherty (2:11.93) in the 200 butterfly final. Fredericksen (2:07.37) was caught in the final 50 yards and was defeated by .73 seconds.
 
Senior Meaghan Rowley, who also swam in the 200 back final, finished eighth. Freshmen Marinda Kitchen and Lindsey Anderson rounded out the 200 fly with sixth and eighth place times. Kitchen's, 2:14.91 was a personal best.
 
Freshman Laura Bradley (pictured) added another top-10 time to her resume, posting a 55.01 in the 100 freestyle "B" final, .08 seconds faster than her prelim time in the morning.
 
The final race of the day saw Radford's "A" 400 relay squad of Bradley, sophomore Yvonne Smith, Flinn and Frazelle turned in a season-best 3:40.91, almost nine seconds faster than any of their swims this year.
 
In the first final of the day, freshman Stephanie Lauer churned out a 19:18.15 for a personal best in the 1650 freestyle.
 
In the prelims, Radford was strong 200 backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly with a total of 11 finals qualifiers. Four Highlanders, Fredericksen, Doherty, Kitchen and Anderson reached the "A" final of the fly, while Frazelle, Flinn and Rowley earned top eight times in the backstroke.
 
In the breast, Schweitzer and Jessee registered top-8 finishes, while Madeline Schouten and senior Sydney Sweet qualified for the "B" final.  Frazelle and freshman Laura Bradley posted "B" final times in the 100 freestyle with Bradley swimming a personal best 55.11, which was good for a top-10 mark (9th).
 
Radford will be off until the New Year when it heads to Fort Myers, Fla. to take on defending CCSA champion, Florida Gulf Coast on Jan. 14.
