SOFTBALL SWEPT AT MARSHALL

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Radford was swept by Marshall in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Dot Hicks Field. The Highlanders fell by the scores of 4-0 and 7-3.

G1 – Marshall 4, Radford 0

Radford (9-19) was held to a pair of hits as it fell in game one, 4-0. Sophomore Whitney Davis recorded both hits, which included a double in the first inning.

The Thundering Herd (12-23) scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. A RBI double by Katalin Lucas made it 1-0 in the second. Kaelynn Greene used her speed for the second run of the game. She reached on an infield single, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on a pop up to second base in shallow rightfield.

A two-run home run by Kristina Braxton capped off the Herd's scoring as they doubled their advantage to 4-0 in the fifth.

Following Davis' double, Radford threatened in the first with runners on second and third and two outs, but could not capitalize. The Highlanders did not put another runner on base until a one-out single by Davis in the seventh.

Sophomore Rachael Walters suffered the complete game loss. She allowed three earned runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

G2 – Marshall 7, Radford 3

After Radford took a 2-0 lead in first, Marshall scored seven runs and completed the sweep with a 7-3 victory over Radford in the nightcap.

The Highlanders out hit the Herd, 11-10 and had two base knocks each from junior Mackenzie Blackwell, sophomore Nia Chiles, Davis, senior Jessie Hutchens and sophomore Becky Mantel.

Blackwell was 2-for-3 with a triple and run scored, recording her first collegiate extra base hit and multi-hit game. Hutchens homered for the eighth time this season and 23rd time in her career, moving her into eighth in the Radford annals.

Radford took advantage of two Marshall errors and put up a two-spot in the second for a 2-0 lead. Blackwell tripled with one out and scored on a two-out error by the third baseman. Two batters later, freshman Summer Robinson scooted home when the throw on Chiles' infield single sailed over the first baseman's head.

Marshall pushed three runs across in the third with only one ball leaving the infield to surge ahead, 3-2. Two infield singles and a bloop over the shortstop put the Herd on the board. Following an intentional walk, a swinging bunt evened the game and a chopper to short that was misplayed allowed the go-ahead run to score.

A solo home run in the fourth by Taylor Winton doubled their lead to 4-2. Four errors and two more infield singles led to three unearned runs in the fifth and a 7-2 advantage.

Junior Kelsey Weddle suffered the loss in two-plus innings of work. She surrendered three runs, two earned, on five hits with a walk and strikeout. Freshman Abby Morrow allowed just one earned run on five hits (four infield) in four innings of relief. She struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Radford plays its first home games of the season on Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6 hosting Presbyterian in a Big South series. First pitch on Saturday at the newly renovated RU Softball Field is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
