SOFTBALL DROPS BOTH ENDS OF TWINBILL AT LONGWOOD

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

FARMVILLE, Va. – Radford was held to three hits and a run as it was swept by Longwood in a Big South doubleheader on Saturday evening at Lancer Field. The Highlanders (22-27, 14-9 Big South) were defeated by the scores of 2-1 and 4-0.

GAME 1 –Longwood 2, Radford 1

Longwood (37-14, 16-6) edged Radford, 2-1 in the opener as Elizabeth McCarthy and sophomore Rachael Walters locked up in a pitchers dual.

McCarthy came within four outs of a no-hitter and struck out 10, while Walters was the tough luck loser. She scattered five hits and struck out four.

Sophomore Becky Mantel provided the only offense for the Highlanders with her ninth home run of the season.

Megan Baltzell's solo shot with one out in the first put the Lancers up 1-0 after an inning of play. The Lancers doubled their lead to 2-0 in the third on a bases loaded walk. Further damage was averted as Walters got a strikeout and ground out to end the frame.

The Highlanders' only hit of the game put them on the board with two outs in the sixth as Mantel launched a solo home run to left, cutting her team's deficit in half.  Radford drew a two-out walk in the seventh but could not take advantage of it.

GAME 2 – Longwood 4, Radford 0

Longwood scored four runs in the fifth and Libby Morris tossed a two-hit shutout as the Lancers swept the doubleheader with a 4-0 victory in the night cap.

The fourth was highlighted by RBI single by Katie Shinrock and run-scoring double by Baltzell. A three-base throwing error allowed the first run to score and a sac fly added the final run.

Freshman Abby Morrow suffered the defeated in 4.1 innings of work. She allowed two earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and zero walks.

Morris limited the Highlanders to a pair of infield singles by junior Mackenzie Blackwell and freshman Kayla Bishton. She struck out six and walked three.

Radford's only threat was when it loaded the bases in the second, but a shallow fly ball ended the opportunity.

Baltzell and Emily Murphy had two hits apiece for the Lancers.

Despite the defeats, Radford will be the No. 3 seed at next week's Big South Tournament after Campbell and Charleston Southern split their doubleheader today.

The teams will wrap up the series at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow.
