RADFORD, Va. – Welcome to the Radford Roundup, where fans can find out all the information they need on upcoming Radford Athletics events taking place between Friday, March 1st through Monday, March 4th.
 
  SOFTBALL
 

vs. Austin Peay / Coastal Carolina – Fri., March 1 @ 9:30 a.m. / 2 p.m.

  • The Highlanders are coming off a tough 10-0 loss to Virginia Tech in their first midweek and home game of the season. Radford only tallied three hits in the five-inning contest.
  • Radford looks to bounce back at the Chanticleer Classic this weekend and will open the weekend with Austin Peay and Coastal Carolina on Friday.
  • The Highlander offense is still looking to get out of a rut after scoring only two runs in the last five games.
  • Sydney Fisher is red hot at the plate for the Highlanders. She's hitting .450 with an 11-game hitting streak and leads the team with 18 base knocks and 10 RBIs.
  • Hannah Medlam is batting .394 early in her senior year with a .432 on-base and .515 slugging percentage.
  • Jessie Marvin has been a bright spot in the pitching staff in her second season. She leads the team with a 1.19 ERA and 20 strikeouts through 29.1 innings pitched.
  • Austin Peay enters with a 4-2 record at neutral site games. They've defeated ULM, Wright State, Jackson State and Middle Tennessee on the road.
  • The Governors also topped McNeese State in a three game series on the road last weekend.
  • Coastal Carolina has the best record of all teams competing in the tournament. Their resume presents itself with numerous wins over Big South schools and losses to only UCF, No. 8 Tennessee and most recently No. 13 South Carolina on Wednesday night.
  • Altogether, the team has scored 86 runs off 80 hits and has a 1.36 ERA, which ranks in the top 10 nationally.
  • Ashley Guillette and Kaitlin Beasley-Polko have combined for 84 of the Chanticleers 85 strikeouts and 96.0 of the 98.0 innings pitched so far this season.

  • UNLV brings in the second-best record of the field with 11 wins, but two of its last three games have resulted in loses – one to Maryland and the other to Portland State.
  • The Rebels ranks just outside the top 25 in the nation with a .329 batting average but rank first in the Mountain West.
  • Lauren Tycksen is a big part of the offensive production with 22 hits (17th nationally), two triples (20th nationally) and scoring 1.43 runs per game (ninth nationally). She leads the Mountain West in all three categories.
  • Jenny Bressler (6-1) has been the workhorse for the Rebels in the circle with three complete games through 46 innings pitched and 39 strikeouts.
  • Jacksonville has lost three of its last five games but has wins against UMass Lowell and College of Charleston.
  • Kassidy Cross leads the Dolphins with a .344 batting average and 11 hits.
  • Sophomore outfielder Hannah Roberts has nine hits but has a team-high three home runs and eight RBIs.

  • Radford defeated Austin Peay, 7-4, in its only meeting last season.
  • The Highlanders used the long ball effectively as five of their 11 hits were home runs. Sofia Tapia hit a pair, while Hunter Mundy and Maggie Rowe hit one apiece and Talia Douglas claimed her first collegiate dinger in the victory.
  • This season APSU has four players with double-digit hits all batting over .300 this season. Carly Mattson leads the squad with 18 hits – six doubles – 14 RBIs and 12 runs scored with a .375 batting average.

  • Radford returns to action after a walk-off, 7-6 loss at Virginia Tech on Tuesday afternoon.
  • Right fielder Andrew Szamski (1-for-2, RBI) was on base four times as he drew three walks. Catcher Straton Podaras went 2-for-5 with an RBI and DH/left fielder Adam Whitacre drove in two runs and homered. Third baseman Matt Roth added a 3-run homer, his first of the season. Andrew Nardi (2.0 innings), Bruce Hudson (1 inning) and Austin Gerber (1 inning) all pitched scoreless innings in relief.
  • Szamski, the reigning Big South Player of the Week, leads the team in batting (.391), HR (3), RBI (9), slugging (.826) and on base percentage (.516).
  • Current Big South Freshman of the Week David Bryant is off to a terrific start as he's batting .364 with seven runs scored to go along with an even .500 on base efficiency. He is also a team-best 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
  • Spencer Horwitz has enjoyed the most success when it come to advancing runners as he is 8-for-11 (73 percent).
  • Highlander ace Zack Ridgely (1-0, 2.08 ERA) will start the opener against the Blazers. The southpaw has allowed two earned runs in 8.2 innings of work over his first couple of starts.
  • Derek Domecq (1-0, 3.00 ERA, 6.0 inn.) and Cole Dunn (8.59 ERA, 7.1 inn.) will also make starts in the series.
  • UAB is already 6-1 in home contests and are coming off a 10-6 victory versus Alabama State.
  • Colton Schultz is batting .438 with 12 runs scored, a homer and 11 RBI's.
  • Zack Davis is hitting .419 with four doubles and J Paul Fullerton has a team-high 14 RBI's
  • The Blazers own a .302 team batting average and have outscored their opponents by a 75-35 margin.
  • Tanner Graham (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 8.2 inn.),Tyler Gates (0-0, 6.00 ERA, 6.0 inn.) and Tanner Rusk (0-0, 3.68 ERA, 7.1 inn.) are scheduled to pitch against the Highlanders.
  • Domecq will get the assignment against Gates on Saturday. The left-hander had a terrific outing against Bucknell (Feb. 24), earning the victory after allowing just two earned runs in five frames against the Bison.
  • Dunn will be opposed by Rusk on Sunday. The right-hander has made two starts thus far, coming up with a no-decision against No. 11 ranked East Carolina and taking a loss at Wofford. Dunn allowed just an earned run in five innings of work against the Pirates but yielded six earned runs in just 2.1 innings versus Wofford.

  • The Highlanders are looking to bounce back from a 14-9 loss at George Washington last weekend which bumped their season record to 1-1.
  • New River Valley rivals Radford and Virginia Tech have played each other twice before – once during the 2016 season and once during the 2017 season – and the Hokies came out on top both times.
  • Sunday's showdown marks the third time in program history Radford has gone up against a nationally ranked opponent, joining No. 20 Virginia Tech on Feb. 25, 2017 and No. 25 High Point on March 31, 2018.
  • Adrian Rius (7), Lindsey Carroll (6), Callie Bonnel (5) and Juliette Ruland (5) are leading the Highlanders on offense, combining for 23 of the team's 27 goals scored this season.
  • The Hokies began the 2019 season ranked No. 14 in the nation, but have dropped all three of their games against Top-25 opponents so far, including a heartbreaking 11-10 overtime loss to ACC rival Duke on Feb. 23.
  • Sophomore midfielder Paige Petty has been excellent for VT this season, scoring a team-high 21 goals on 47 shots. Emma Crooks (13) and Mary Claire Byrne (10) are also in double-figure scoring territory.
