Highlanders Complete Sweep Over Buccaneers in Home Series Finale

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford baseball team won both games of their doubleheader against Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon to the tune of an 11-3 win and 6-3 win.

In between the two games today the Highlanders honored 17 seniors which included 5 seniors from the shortened 2020 season.

Game One
Like the opener on Friday night, Radford scored early and often to put Charleston Southern down early. Facing the Big South preseason pitcher of the year the Highlanders showed no fear in roughing him up for 9 runs (5 earned) over 4.2 innings.

The scoring got started as Sean Cheely stayed hot with a single into center to score Garrett Matheny. In the second inning Cheely reached again after an error was committed by the Buccaneers second baseman that sent two runners in to score and make it a 3-0 ballgame.

David Bryant opened the game up even more with a triple in the second inning to make it 5-0 while Straton Podaras notched his first RBI of the night via groundout, and it was 6-0. The Buccaneers would tack on 3 runs in the third to make it a 6-3 game, but that was as close as they would get.

Hunter Williams entered in the fourth inning to pitch and was lights out. Williams went 4 innings not allowing a single run to score to help solidify a win for the Highlanders. Landon Higgerson finished the game off with two scoreless frames as well striking out two batters in the process.

The scoring was capped off for the Highlanders in the eighth inning where Podaras crushed a homer over the left field wall to make it an 11-3 final score. The win solidified a series win for the Highlanders, but the work wasn't done after celebrating senior day in between the two games.

Game Two
The second game of the doubleheader featured less offense than the two games that came before it in the series. Both teams combined for just 5 runs through the first seven innings.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Radford got its first two runs of the game thanks to singles by Will Harless and Jalen Buster. Radford would be held scoreless until the eighth inning, however, where they trailed 3-2 despite strong pitching efforts from Ryan Bywaters and Alex Perkins.

Harless would notch his second RBI of the game in the eighth thanks to a sacrifice fly that made it a 3-3 game. With two runners on and just one out in the inning, Connor Bagnieski stepped up to plate and delivered a clutch three-run homerun that was crushed easily over the right field wall. This opened up the game to a 6-3 lead that Radford would never relinquish.

Bruce Hudson finished the game off on the mound for Radford tossing three quality innings. Hudson allowed just two hits and recorded a strikeout to limit the Buccaneers' offense and allow the Highlanders to strike back just in time for the much-needed win.

Between the two games Radford saw a lot of offensive highlights. Podaras continued his hot hitting streak with three hits, three runs, and two RBIs between the two games while also throwing out four baserunners behind the plate. David Bryant had a strong first game recording three hits while Matheny tallied three hits and two runs across the two games. Bagnieski also had continued to see the ball well as of late with his clutch home run that highlighted a three-hit day with six RBIs.
