RADFORD, Va. – Quincy Etienne and Patrick Siczek each notched their first goal of the season to lift the Radford Men's Soccer team to a 2-0 win at VMI on Wednesday afternoon.
I was pleased with our overall performance. We minimized our mistakes and were able to keep a clean sheet," said Head Coach Chris Barrett. "I thought we did well in possession and created many chances to score goals. We'll need to finish our chances better as we progress through the season but all wins are good, especially on the road."
Etienne wasted no time putting the Highlanders ahead, racing behind the defense and hitting the back of the net from a tight angle in the 4th minute.
Joseba Incera and Trevor Kallendorf have been battling all season for the starting goalkeeper gig, but Incera got the opportunity in this contest and made the most of it. The junior from Santurtzi, Spain came up big with a diving save in the 30th minute to protect the lead which remained 1-0 heading into halftime.
Radford then doubled its lead to 2-0 in the 51st minute. Juan Benavides saw his first shot saved by the Keydets, but he collected the rebound and passed to Patrick Siczek who buried the follow-up.
The rest of the second half went by without incident, as the Highlanders defense held strong to deny VMI any dangerous chances. Radford saw the game out and secured the victory.
"We will have to be on top of our game and prepare well for a very good UNCG team in our next game, this Saturday on the road," Barrett noted after the win.
