TWO-OUT SIXTH INNING RALLY LIFTS SOFTBALL OVER INDIANA

Box Score

CLEARWATER, Fla. –
A five-run, two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth lifted Radford over Indiana, 6-4, Sunday morning in the Highlanders' (7-8) final contest at the USF Under Armour Showcase.

Trailing 4-1 with two outs in the sixth, Radford's rally was ignited by Kristen Shifflett, who hustled down the line for a two-out infield single. That was followed by Nichole Beall launching her team-leading sixth home run, a two-run blast to left, making it a 4-3 ball game.

After Sarah Himan doubled to left, the inning was extended on an error by the pitcher allowing Shannon Keefe to reach and pinch runner Ryndee Ruch to scoot home with the tying run.

Taylor Cunningham stepped up a roped the game-winning double to left center, plating Keefe from second. Cunningham would cross the dish with an insurance run on a Hope Creasy single.

Creasy was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.

Up until two outs in the fifth, the Radford bats were stymied by Indiana starter Sarah Olson. The Highlanders did not reach base until an error in the fourth, but that runner was quickly erased on a double play.

Creasy finally solved Olson with two outs in the fifth. She drilled a solo home run, her fourth of the year, to left for the Highlanders' first hit and run of the game. It was her third straight contest with a round tripper and cut the Hoosiers' lead to 3-1.

Samantha Berenter got that run right back for Indiana with a solo long ball in the top of the sixth.

Indiana brought the go ahead run to the plate in the seventh, but Chelsea Kelley escaped the jam by retiring the final two batters on a pop up and ground out.

Kelley (5-3), who entered the contest with two runners on and no outs in the fourth, picked up the win in relief of starter Heather Paquette. She allowed a run on four hits with three strikeouts in three innings of work.

Paquette went four-plus, surrendering three runs on five hits with a pair of punch outs and one walk.

A two-out double followed by a single by Berenter put Indiana on the board, 1-0, in the top of the fourth.

The Hoosiers pushed two more across in the fifth on a two-run two-out triple by Breanna Saucedo.

Radford returns to the field for its home opener on Tuesday, March 16 hosting Georgia Southern in a doubleheader starting at 3 pm. The twinbill starts a stretch of eight home games in six days, which includes its league opener against Liberty on Thursday and the Highlander Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
